About this deal

Have a plan for managing conflicts: How will you manage conflicts between your teammates? What are your solutions for handling differences? How will you deal with personality conflicts? In this week’s video, I’m talking about how to build trust at work by bringing the personalities, individualism, and egos of your team away from the extremes and to a successful, productive place in the middle. Whether you’ve got the ultimate team player, yes-man who shows up for everything (but then can’t or won’t deliver) or the ultimate individual who does great work (but can’t seem to get along with anyone else), THIS video is for you, my friend!

If you want to reach your goals, then you need to make sure that everyone feels valued and included. You want to make sure that people are included in meetings, decisions, and projects. It doesn’t matter what kind of team you have—whether it’s a family, a sports team, or a business team—if everyone feels like they are a part of the group, then you’re going to be able to achieve a lot more. During her research Stuart realised that working together requires the negotiation of multiple identities; there are personal, team and professional identities continuously at play or, as one participant in the research put it, ‘When you ask for my views, do you mean as a single professional, as a member of my organisation, or as a member of this multiagency team?” Only thing is, there is an 'I' in the team, there's me, you, us, there's a collection of 'I's', without a collection of 'I's' there is no team. Barking out this phrase will not magically lift morale, or get you to do something you don't want to do, or agree to an opinion you don't want to. No, this classic cliche phrase is rolled out more often than not, as a result of someones frustration. I’ve heard rumors that Saddam Hussein was captured by an elite organization, but gave the credit to Regular Forces. Why? They were not about publicity. If they wanted to grab the glory, they could have it any day of the week. The team of special operations and regular forces ran Saddam to the ground. While the actual capture was made by one group, they made sure that respect and recognition went to the rest who might not get it.

in a hole

A working group is more like a team of golfers that go off and play on their own and then get together to add up their scores at the end of the day. How to manage conflict within a team – and right now, in the midst of COVID-19, how to manage conflict in virtual teams – is an extremely important part of any good manager’s role. You need to figure out which personalities your team members have and bring everyone away from the extremes we can find ourselves in. The term ‘team player’ is probably one of the most overused yet relevant, desired qualities across all the workforce. It’s definitely the most generic skill used on resumes as well as in job descriptions. And don’t get me started on all the annoying office mottos it’s spawned ( “There is no ‘I ‘in team”, “We, better than me”, “Teamwork makes the dream work!”). But if it’s such a cliched quality why the importance? Because no one wants to work with an asshole, that’s why. And guess where the “I” in Team has been found, that’s right, the A-hole.

All I can take from his words is that he expected to be fawned over as a hero. I guess he wanted the Medal of Honor for his two shots — never mind how many others were involved. That he expected something different from his service, just because of his deeds in uniform, is a bit much. Yes, those who go above and beyond deserve recognition. What makes him different than anyone else on that team that night? He did the job he was trained and assigned to do. Controversial maybe but over the years I’ve come to the conclusion that there isn’t just an ‘I’ in team, it’s actually one of the most important elements of a fully functioning, and high performing, team. This first appeared in The Havok Journal on November 7, 2014. The issues discussed are just as relevant today. Now, perhaps more than ever, as we start to emerge from the economic devastation of the pandemic, you need your teams to come together, support each other and deliver. To do that you need to make sure that the component parts of your team, its individuals, are supported, focused, contributing and collaborating, which for me is why there is an I in TEAM.Instead of working together as a team, with one exception, I was told that it was a revenue problem and it was mine and mine alone to deal with.

Knowing your strengths and weaknesses as well as the strengths and weaknesses of your teammates can help you build a team that complements one another. When you have a good team, you’ll have less stress, you can focus on being a good leader, and you will be able to achieve more together than doing it alone. Develop a Common Vision Developing hunger and drive requires accountability and a structure that supports and motivates team members to continuously grow. Connecting to the mission of the team and using teammates to motivate and inspire each other are great ways for a team to thrive. Rob was on the team. He was not alone, did not fly in by himself, and did take out Bin Laden by himself. He was part of a team. I won’t go into how really loud the silent service the SEALS has been, what with their movies and books they’ve been putting out. The truth is a majority of work these days is accomplished in teams. This may consist of your internal colleagues, cross departmental initiatives, or even 3rd-party collaborations. How you work with others will travel fast, including into the ears of your would-be promoters. Being a team player will raise your reputation within the company and attract others to want to work with you. Here are the key elements to being a great team player. No, there is an 'I' in team, there are lots of 'I's, and they need to be woven together. I've written before about the 3 questions every leader needs to ask on day 1 of creating a top performing, or healthy team:

in a ˈhole

If you want to know how to improve communication within a team, the first thing that you need to know is that both are wrong. There IS an “I” in “Team”– and no, asserting your “I”-ness does NOT necessarily make you an A-Hole.
