The books although very different in there storyline follow a similar pattern of switching between 2 stories, one in present day and one set in the past, although the stories are ultimately connected. the climax was amazing and there was a point (when martin broke our of jail) that i couldn't put the book down at all. As the war starts to get closer she ends up taking in evacuee’s two little girls and their teacher as time goes on she learns life isn’t ever going to be the same anymore. The hazy half memories of children added to the frustration of the information we lose to time and secrets.

The two young girls Maisie and Shirley shared a room and their teacher Stephen Smith had another room. This is totally engaging story is set-in two-time periods present day and during the 1940’s which I loved, especially the 1940’s one. The author has done an excellent job of weaving together the past and present, making the story come alive with vivid details and captivating characters. In the aftermath of a family tragedy, she retreats to a family home, ‘Tall Chimneys’ on the coast in Sidmouth, Devon. Even with a decidedly unlikable husband in the neighbourhood, she is merely trying to make the best of a horrible time in her life. This was a beautifully written and amazing story surrounding a beautiful regency house and the people who lived in the house.

After tragedy that happens to Nancy’s family she decides to hide in her grandmothers house Tall Chimneys unfortunately someone finds out where she is and Martin her stepbrother starts to message her she doesn’t feel safe anymore, there is so much intrigue and tension and you just hope that everything works out happy for her.To start this review I want to say that the marketing of this book is not right this is marketed as a thriller when it should really be marketed as a historical fiction with a dual tone line mystery. My favorite part of this book was learning more about our MCs and how well their characters were developed.

Wow what can I say this book was amazing, it was a fast paced and kept me guessing throughout a perfect book for psychological thrillers fans alike! i appreciate the tribute to the second world war (although it wasn't originally advertised as historical fiction, it very much is) but i felt like it was forced down our throats. It focused more on the constant fear and spoke a lot about people's reaction to the massive change which was refreshing. However, I have been pleasantly surprised by how gripping and entertaining they are, and have now read every single one. Half the book is a World War 2 story in a more rural British area about a woman whose son goes off to war and takes in London evacuees and half the book is contemporary told from the young woman who is moving to her family's home after her stepbrother is imprisoned. But this book suffers from that dual POV trope of using chapter cliffhangers but then switching to the other POV. Jane worked as an RLF Fellow at Exeter University and is a former creative writing tutor at Oxford University. At first I was confused, then a bit annoyed because I wasn't necessarily in the mood for historical fiction, but in the end, the WWII storyline ended up being more fully fleshed out than the present day one.

To get away from the press, Nancy retreats to her Grandmothers Regency House ‘Tall Chimneys’ in a rural seaside village near Devon.I'd happily have read a whole story set in wartime without any need for the present day shenanigans; it was interesting to read how people on the South Coast lived under constant fear of German invasion, and the actions taken to potentially defend themselves - the "secret army" - if it came to pass.
