As well as the usual ‘track listing, personnel and recording dates’ type information, the booklet is packed with rare photos, interviews with (or articles on) the musicians involved, and other insightful articles such as an analysis of Bill Evans’s time in Denmark. This collector's edition vinyl album features a selection of eight musical gems, pressed on a high-quality 180g black vinyl, encapsulating the essence of Bill Evans' elegant and emotive playing style. Highlights of the collection include trio performances from 1965 featuring legendary Danish jazz bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen; the only solo piano version of 'My Funny Valentine' by Evans known to exist; a 1966 orchestral suite performed with the Evans trio accompanied by the Danish Radio Big Bandconducted by trumpeter/arranger Palle Mikkelborg; and much more!

The trio-parts with Alex Riel on drums (and either NHØP or Gomez on bass) are also great - a little less so the first 3 tunes w. It runs counter to some recent Evans reissues by featuring an array of instrumental configurations, and it’s a strong showcase of how he adapted his playing to reflect the settings. The performances with two different trios, two orchestras, and Evans solo at the piano all display his masterful musicianship and perceptive ears. If Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue is the most common entry point for a new jazz fan and John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme is number two, a typical next step would be an album by Bill Evans. The beautifully designed package includes previously unpublished photos, insightful liner notes and interviews.

Mikkelborg’s string arrangements are probably too romantic (or cloying – take your pick) for modern tastes but the big-band arrangements work well, showing Mikkelborg’s indebtedness to Gil Evans – especially on the titular track Treasures, where Mikkelborg’s muted trumpet sounds like a homage to the then very recent Miles Davis / Gil Evans collaborations of 1957–68.

In the edit page, go to the 'Metadata' tab and add your Juno artist, label or release page for listeners to purchase your release / releases. Evans’ left hand takes a similar approach to ‘Re: Person I Knew’, doubling as a rhythmic and progressively harmonic device. Not quite the epic versions of Nardis of Evans’s latter years (which could stretch to twice that length) but perhaps an indicator of what was to come. Description 'Treasures' is a 3LP set of never-before-released live recordings by jazz piano icon Bill Evans insolo, trio and orchestral performances from the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, television and radio broadcasts in Denmark in the mid-to-late 1960s, 180g vinyl - triple gatefold sleeve.

On listening, it seems that Evans regarded the orchestra no different than his trio – they were fellow musicians to hear, listen to, and respond to. The second indicator of a worthwhile investment is that the credits in the booklet include two people who worked on ‘sound restoration’ – and given that the recordings are from tapes of sixties radio broadcasts, they’ve done a good job. On the standards ‘Stella by Starlight’ and ‘Autumn Leaves’, Evans, and his trio, including his long-time bassist Eddie Gomez crackle with sparks and life, the trio members taking their place as genuine contributors to the song as it unfolds. i was at 2 of these shows and they were a highlight of the year for me, so glad to see this music released -- the interplay is incredible and the interpretations are so fresh. The beautifully designed triple gatefoldLP set showcases previously unpublished photos by Jan Perssonfrom Evans' Danish tours, as well as insightful liner notes by acclaimed author, journalist and Evans scholar, Marc Myers, plus interviews and statements from Danish drummer Alex Riel, music journalist, Danish producer and Evans discographer Peter Larsen, Palle Mikkelborg, Evans' long-time trio-mates - bassist Eddie Gomezand drummer Marty Morell, and pianists Ran Blakeand Matthew Shipp.

But Treasures: Solo, Trio and Orchestra Recordings from Denmark (1965-1969) is just getting started.More recently though I have been really into Jazz music and I was just curious if anybody has listened to Bill Evans Treasures album.
