Description

n the twisties or up/down hills, individual link distances can drop off slightly, but Mesh 2.0’s much-improved multi-path/best-path approach mitigates many issues experienced with Mesh version 1; Mesh 2.0 is just plain better. A waterproof module helps prevent accumulation of water within, which could cause damage to the sensitive internal components and cause it to shut down,

As part of the ‘utility’ approach, Sena wisely bundled this feature into the app; under Setup, it allows the user to connect and configure the very useful WiFi Adapter harness, making charging and firmware updates even easier than they were. Sena Firmware with Mesh 2.0 Updating While the two Bluetooth intercoms paired automatically, I did have an issue with the TomTom – once that had made an announcement, the second intercom (the one not paired to my other devices) couldn’t initiate a conversation, even when the TomTom wasn’t speaking any more. The ‘main’ unit (paired to the sat-nav) was still able to link the two up, so if you don’t disconnect (remember that you’ll only hear the other person when they speak), you won’t be aware of this glitch. The 50R is built to be low profile, with less hardware for more rugged riding and better weather resistance. The 50S is the unit that has all the bells and whistles but is a little bulkier.

A FRESH DESIGN FOR A BRAND NEW APP

The only feature not yet validated is Group Mesh…for some reason, neither the input sequence or the App Mesh Intercom controls result in Group Mesh creation; is this a firmware issue or user issue? We will find out. The Sena 50S module is designed to fit all motorcycle helmets and is widely considered a universal unit. The choice of microphones supplied in the box means that the unit can be used for full-face, modular, or even open-face helmets. Despite having very similar features and specifications, I personally preferred the Sena 50S to the Sena 50R thanks to the addition of the ambient audio feature and better battery life. This is not a unique problem to Sena, as anyone who uses voice controls with anything like phones, laptops, etc., will tell you, it’s not yet a perfect system. The Sena 50S-02 features a high-density battery that charges 30% faster in comparison to its predecessors. The headset is fully charged in only an hour, providing up to 9 hours of Mesh intercom talk time or 14 hours of Bluetooth intercom talk time. Plus, with Sena’s fast-charging feature, in as little as 20 minutes, the 50S will provide up to 3.5 hours of Mesh communication or 6 hours of Bluetooth intercom!

I have the most trouble with ‘Hey Sena, stop music’, with perhaps a 30% success rate. If I very clearly enunciate the plosive in ‘stop’, it seems to work a bit better, but the device also doesn’t seem to like one command directly following another, so you need to pause a few seconds, then try again, which can be frustrating when you need to shut the music off to speak to someone. In terms of specs, there is no difference between the Sena 50R and 50S. Then why Sena made two products if they are not different. The differences are in physical terms, the body and casing are different. Jog Dial vs Button Control In this article, I explain the differences between both these models from Sena and voice my opinion of which model is the best. The Open Mesh channels need to be set individually by the users, although actioning this using the MIB and Jog Wheel or the Mesh management screen on the App, is simple and reliable. Perhaps down the road we will see more complex common channel or group management features? Remember how I keep harping that it really (really) pays to keep your systems updated…well, this is the no-brainer example of why. No matter whether you use Mesh intercom, Bluetooth intercom, or a combination of both, upgrading to the latest firmware built for the respective devices provides unequaled community compatibility. Finally, the Sena Mesh 2.0 Highlights & Insights The Sena 50R is indeed distinctive compared to the more traditional shape and fitment of the larger classic or ‘standard’ 50S variant. Between its smaller sleeker frame and low-profile mounting option, there is a big difference in helmet footprint between the two 50 Series products.

Due to advancements in technology, this feature brings forth a strong and reliable connection strategy. This gives rise to many channel communication or even private conversations if you want one. Sure enough, with May-Day here and in connecting the Sena Momentum EVO helmet to its WiFi Adapter, the WiFi sync and charging LEDs came on as expected and, about two minutes later the middle (Firmware) LED indicated there was an update waiting. You can access your smartphone assistant by saying “Hey Siri” or “Hey Google” and therefore have access to your full range of phone features on the road. Despite the length of this submission, we haven’t covered everything about the new Sena 50 Series systems…but when/if group activities and travel become (more) viable, you can rest assured that more user and performance data awaits gathering; with an update to this review provided in some form. In the meantime, with a fair amount of static and ride testing over the last two months or so while appreciating ongoing COVID-19 limitations, virtually all the features of the 50R and 50S systems have been evaluated, along with input from four other users as well.
