Description

Lots of fun lines but a few too many 'aha' plot moments and too many characters (always in groups of five). Whilst trying to find a mobile phone signal, Frankie finds her way into the attic and stumbles across some old maps and books. It's also a really good fantasy in it's own right, with fun, interesting world-building, some original ideas and good characters. Joel is much more impressed with all of it than she is, even when they stumble across a secret door that seems to lead to another world.

If you were registered for the newsletter, you will now receive the Puffin Schools newsletter, which is filled with all the latest information about accompanying resources and upcoming shows. The chapters are short, there are diary entries, view points change, overall it is a light hearted adventure read and if you need to drop out of our world for a little while this is a fab one to enter.

Very soon, she has unwittingly joined the Fellowship of the Bacon Roll and is surrounded by the brave warriors, noble sidekicks, mysterious double-crossers and conflicted villains that one would expect to see in any generic fantasy story. Not only is she stuck at Grandad’s for a whole week while her parents swan off to the arctic, now she’s discovered that there’s NO WIFI anywhere in the house! The bestselling author of Kid Normal delivers a hilarious, action-packed adventure in which Frankie must change her plans of watching YouTube and eating pot noodles for a rescue mission to save her kidnapped Grandad from a weird magical world. When their Granda is kidnapped by gnoblins they have to enter a magical realm to get him back embarking on a magical, dangerous and unbelievable tale like the games their parents created.

Kenneth Anderson’s illustrations bring Frankie’s quest to life through the journal pages interspersed within the story and I loved the detailed map of Parallelia at the start of the book. Frankie and her nerdy younger brother, Joel, normally go and stay at their Aunty’s when their mum and dad go away but this time she’s in hospital.
