Indeed, it is edited in a way that makes very large sections of the film look as if they were prepared for a gigantic MTV video or special program. Personally, I would’ve appreciated a subtitle option that showed the source material of the videos used, similar to what Criterion did for The Velvet Underground documentary last year. Told through sublime, kaleidoscopic, never-before-seen footage, performances and music, MOONAGE DAYDREAM is the first officially sanctioned film to explore Bowie’s creative, musical and spiritual journey, guided by Bowie’s own narration. Note: I’m taking a break from watching the Oppenheimer blu-ray, the latest blu-ray tech, which means I don’t have a firmware issue as the Criterion people replied to me when I wrote them about this defective disc. If, on the other hand, you want a biopic fitting of Bowie's shape-shifting musical persona, then this will fill the bill.

The Bowie that emerges through his own words, images, and performances in Morgen’s film is of an artist who knew exactly who he was and stayed true to his all-encompassing vision of life. It's no lie to say at the start, it's a visual overload, scenes interlacing, quick cuts, screaming fans, and musical mayhem all coagulate into one opening sequence that's heady and thrilling.

While this hasn’t stopped anyone from doing so (see 2020’s disaster Stardust), Bowie’s estate has done very well with sticking to the late singer’s wishes. I'm also the author of two self-published books, "The Camp: Stories from the Summer" and "The College: Stories from King's. In fact, there is plenty of footage where I think that the difference in quality between the native 4K and 1080p presentations is insignificant, and these are not the areas where standard definition content is used. These omissions give a false sense that Bowie’s vitality was extinguished decades before his passing, when nothing could be further from the truth. As odd as it may sound, it feels like filler material in a massive show-off piece that simply takes advantage of Bowie's strangeness, fully aware of its market potential as well.

It doesn’t offer much by way of intimacy on the subject, failing to penetrate the defensive layers that Bowie built around himself in his public personas. Brett Morgen’s Moonage Daydream is perhaps one of the most immersive documentaries ever made on any musician. As an attempt to convey the appeal and experience of Bowie’s era, its length works against it; what seems exciting and fresh at the beginning becomes repetitive and dull by the time its two-hour-and-fourteen-minute running time concludes. Brett Morgen's Moonage Daydream offers a most unusual glimpse into Bowie's strange world but I found it quite difficult to endure because of its intense ultra-modern visual style. From Oscar-nominated filmmaker Brett Morgen, director of Cobain: Montage of Heck, and featuring never-before-seen concert footage, MOONAGE DAYDREAM is an immersive cinematic experience; an audio-visual space odyssey that not only illuminates the enigmatic legacy of David Bowie but also serves as a guide to living a fulfilling and meaningful life in the 21st Century.
