Description

Kenneth Clark (1903 – 1983) was a British author, museum director, broadcaster, and one of the best-known art historians of his generation. He drew a ewe and lamb – a large form sheltering a small one – which is an important theme in his larger sculpture work. In February 1972 Henry Moore's sculpture studios in the English countryside at Much Hadham were filled with the preparations for his retrospective exhibition at Florence.

Sheep Piece is a sculpture by Henry Moore made in three sizes from 1969-1972, starting in 1969 with a 14 centimetres (5. As a sculpture he was interested in form and texture and in spite of using just biro and felt tip the sketches are animated, interesting and individual. His wider reputation was assured in 1948 when he won the International Sculpture Prize at the Venice Biennale and from then on came public commissions from all over the world. For such a placid subject, the movement and energy generated by Moore showcases his deep fascination with the animal, but one that is essentially of the moment. The maquette was enlarged to a 142 centimetres (56 in) plaster working model in 1971, [6] which was then cast in bronze in an edition of 7+1 (seven casts plus an artist's copy). Henry Moore (1898 – 1986) is known mainly for his sculptures, but he also made a few voluminous sketches.

For anyone wanting to start a serious art collection within whatever budget this could be the best place to start. But how much more meaningful those images can be is made plain when you see a progression of pictures of the same person taken over a long period of time. These sheep sketches are wonderful- they are fluid and expressive, whilst capturing the very essence of the sheep. The effect is both familiar and monumental; as Lord Clark comments, 'We expect Henry Moore to give a certain nobility to everything he draws; but more surprising is the way in which these drawings express a feeling of real affection for their subject. The four full-size casts are at the Henry Moore Foundation in Perry Green, Hertfordshire, in Zürich, in Kansas City, and at the Donald M.It was whilst working in a small room overlooking the fields at his home in Much Hadham that Henry Moore first became aware of the sheep grazing there.
