About this deal

Fear not! They soon reformed to make their ultimate statement, 1997’s Urban Hymns, an album generally recognised to be one of the brilliantly realised discs of the era. Out of adversity came strange fruit. Urban Hymns would sell over 10 million copies and won Best British Album at the 1998 Brits, was short-listed for the Mercury Prize and still ranks super high on all-time best-of polls. A majestic, mercurial and mature work this five-star disc is completely recommended. Jones and Tong formed The Shining, who released one album, before disbanding in 2003. Jones went on to work with Irish musician Cathy Davey. Tong became a live replacement for ex-guitarist Graham Coxon in Blur, an additional guitarist for Gorillaz (both Jones and Tong played guitar for Demon Days Live), and a member of The Good, the Bad & the Queen. McCabe worked in different projects like the London-based Neotropic project and played with some established artists, including John Martyn, The Music, The Beta Band and Faultline. In the years following its release, Urban Hymns has received much acclaim. In 2000 it was voted number 213 in Colin Larkin's All Time Top 1000 Albums. [45] Q included it in their 1999 list of the 90 best albums of the 1990s, [46] while the magazine's readers voted it the eighteenth best album of all-time in 1998, [47] later moved up to sixteenth place in a similar list compiled in 2006. [48] The Verve were awarded with the first ever Q Classic Album award for Urban Hymns at the 2007 Q Awards, [49] and the following year, Urban Hymns was ranked as the tenth best British album of all time in a poll jointly conducted by Q and HMV. [50] It was also nominated for Best British Album of the Last 30 Years at the 2010 Brit Awards, but lost to Oasis' (What's the Story) Morning Glory?. [51] In 2013, NME ranked it at number 128 in its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. [12] The album was also included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. Ashcroft reunited with Jones and Salisbury just a few weeks after the break-up, but McCabe did not rejoin them. The new band hired former Suede guitarist Bernard Butler, but he spent only a couple of days with the band. [22] The band then chose Simon Tong, a school friend credited with originally teaching Ashcroft and Jones to play guitar. The band made no live appearances in 1996, apart from a solo performance from Ashcroft supporting Oasis in New York; [23] the year was spent playing and recording songs for a new album.Melody Maker named Urban Hymns as the number one album of 1997 in its year-end list, [40] and the album ranked at number three on NME 's year-end critics' poll. [41] Q also included it in their own list of the best albums of 1997, [42] and it ranked at number 18 on The Village Voice 's year-end Pazz & Jop critics' poll. [43] At the 1998 Brit Awards, Urban Hymns won the award for Best British Album and the Verve were awarded Best British Group. [31] The same year, Richard Aschroft won an Ivor Novello Award for Songwriter of the Year. [31] The album was also shortlisted for the Mercury Prize, which was ultimately awarded to Gomez' Bring It On. [44] By April 1999, however, renewed tensions within the band, particularly between Ashcroft and McCabe, would lead the Verve to split up for a second time, at the height of their success. Twenty years since Urban Hymns took The Verve from beloved cult band to globe-straddling heroes, the album receives a six-disc super deluxe box set reissue. Soon after their commercial peak, The Verve disbanded in April 1999, citing internal conflicts. [8] According to Billboard magazine, "the group's rise was the culmination of a long, arduous journey that began at the dawn of the decade and went on to encompass a major breakup, multiple lawsuits, and an extensive diet of narcotics". [9] During an eight-year split, Ashcroft dismissed talk of a reunion, saying: "You're more likely to get all four Beatles on stage." [8] The band's original line-up reunited in June 2007, embarking on a tour later that year and releasing the album Forth in August 2008, which spawned the hit single " Love Is Noise". Amid revived tensions, the band broke up for the third time in 2008 following their performance at V Festival. [10] History [ edit ] Formation and Verve (1990–1992) [ edit ]
