Description

After much contemplation, I felt that preserving Mum’s voice should take precedence. With this in mind, only the bare minimum editorial work has been undertaken. Jazz is a person who notices the human detail, tending to follow her instincts and take her time, learning the stories of those involved and exhausting every avenue of inquiry before arriving at a conclusion. These skills certainly serve her well in The Murders at Fleat House and make for an interesting story.

As you might expect, hidden secrets from the past strongly influence present-day events, and we are treated to some typically superb characterisation in the form of DI Jazz Hunter, who I’m sure you’ll agree has the potential to anchor a series of her own. Fleat House – One of the eight boarding houses of St Stephen’s School. Old, dank, dark, eerie, and foreboding, its cellar is rumoured to be haunted by the ghost of a student who died tragically in 1979. DI Jazz Hunter is a fascinating and intriguing character. She is at a crossroads in her life after leaving the Metropolitan Police in London after her divorce from a fellow detective. Norfolk is a new start for her, she wants a quiet life where she can paint and live life at a much slower pace. As a detective she is repected by her contemporites and her superiors as well which is why she is asked to lead the murder investigation. I liked that we got to see all the sides of Jazz’s character; her analytic and methodical investigate technique, her venerability after her divorce and her love and care for her parents. The same attention is paid to the cast of supporting characters who open up the story and many of whom I felt real empathy for, of course there are a few who a very dislikable to say the least. As staff at the school close ranks, the disappearance of young pupil Rory Millar and the death of an elderly Classics Master provide Jazz with important leads but are destined to complicate the investigation further. As snow covers the landscape and another suspect goes missing, Jazz must also confront her own personal demons…

In this latest novel by Riley, The Murders at Fleat House , she transports us to Norfolk, England, home to St. Stephen’s School, an elite boarding school that has all the usual fare, entitled students, unrelenting bullies, ghost stories, favouritism, and a history of scandals, violence, and death that may be about to repeat itself. Many thanks to Net Galley, AuthorBuzz, and the author for a chance to read and review this book. All opinions are expressed voluntarily. Then a particularly grim discovery at the school makes this the most challenging murder investigation of her career. Because Fleat House hides secrets darker than even Jazz could ever have imagined . . .

But the local police cannot rule out foul play and the case prompts the return of high-flying Detective Inspector Jazmine ‘Jazz’ Hunter to the force. Jazz has her own private reasons for stepping away from her police career in London but reluctantly agrees to front the investigation as a favour to her old boss. Then, another body is discovered. And the person also has a connection to Fleat House. What is going on at St Stephens? DISCLOSURE: Thank you to AuthorBuzz via Netgalley for providing a digital ARC of The Murders at Fleat House by Lucinda Riley for review. All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own personal opinions. As I anticipated I absolutely adored reading this book and was really sad when I finished it. With The Murders at Fleat House, Lucinda Riley showed her skills as a masterful storyteller, able to to move between genres with such style and ease. I found myself wondering that if Lucinda was still here if this would have been the first in a new series featuring DI Jazz Hunter, that I’m sure would have been as popular as her Seven Sisters series.

I liked David and his bond with his son Rory, and I was sad about how unworthy his ex-wife was, but at least in books, karma makes its appearance and I hope David's future is brighter than the present! Even though at first I wasn't impressed at some point, the story gripped me, and I couldn't put it down!
