Through romantic relationships, breakups, and their own conflicts, the characters in Beaches always found their way back to each other, and Nippy and I assumed it would always be the same with us.

To break any silence is difficult – never mind one enforced over decades, at the risk of huge commercial damage to a brand as valuable as Houston’s. With robyn's account you begin to understand how whitney went from being a carefree, happy, excited teen who was finding herself and figuring herself out to an addict. Throughout the years Crawford has been approached by several publishers for her true story, and in sharing it, Houston's legacy can be understood in a manner that wasn't always possible. But when Houston started dating Jermaine Jackson in the mid-1980s, then Eddie Murphy, and rap star Bobby Brown, whom she married, Crawford admits it was tremendously difficult.

On that day in 1983 when 19-year-old Houston visited Crawford and gave her a Bible, the two women inscribed the book with lines testifying to their feelings for each other. I do think Robyn was able to show there really was something special about Whitney and I am glad I read this book. Houston became mega-famous when she signed with Arista Records: with a string of number one hit records and sold out concert tours world wide-- her relationship with Crawford was constantly scrutinized by the press. I loved the way Robyn's book did not demonize Whitney but instead showed why things happened the way they did. However, I think this book falls flat in large part because Robyn refuses to acknowledge this distinction.

For years, Houston and Crawford effectively functioned as a couple, living together, occasionally (and chastely) sharing a bed, and remaining emotionally close. Crawford said she'd love to hear Houston sing the song, but Houston responded, "I haven't lived enough to sing it. In 1995, in an even more jaw-dropping episode, Crawford learned of a story running in the National Enquirer in which it was alleged that Houston’s father had hired a thug to “break her [Crawford’s] kneecaps”. Houston would continue to be jealous as well, but not when Crawford dated men, only when she became close to women.

Whitney had a lot of shady people around her including family members but I don't think Robyn was one of those people.

It’s partially clear that they drifted apart because honestly, in the later years, she has few encouraging things to say about Whitney—this seems particularly critical given their *joint* drug use for so many years! In her memoir, Robyn finally tells her story of life with Whitney, from their teen years in East Orange, New Jersey, to time spent traveling the globe with and working for Whitney at the height of her career. She replied, “Look, I don’t have to tell you anything,” a response that infuriated Houston when she found out.
