I found myself frustrated with both characters actions a number of times, but that is a sign of a good novel, when we think of characters as people we know! I found it deeply touching because I myself identify with the story in some ways, so this film is then that but expanded. Told in the first person, this novel reads like a biographical tale of a marriage's end, of the sense of loss, the fear of moving forward, the questions as to whether even this divorce was a mistake.

Whilst it didn’t pack quite as much of an emotional punch for me, it was still a beautiful and heartfelt love story which I’d highly recommend! So much covered, from alcoholism to estrangement, and how hiding your feelings can be the worst thing you could ever do. In addition to a heartfelt story, this book is so funny at times - Celine's crazy father chasing young women, and her sister making a fool of herself over a man at work. However, the story-line did not exactly work out for me; I could not connect with the main character, Celine.

The warmth, humour and compassion of the main characters made them very likeable with me willing them to end up together. A trained yoga and spin teacher, Emily is completely obsessed with dogs and has dreamt of being an author ever since she could hold a pen. I was immediately pulled in by the author's flowing prose and lyrical writing; it was very impressive. The strength in this books lies with the large cast of characters and the friendships and family bonds between them all. Houghton also presents a lovely set of secondary characters, to the people Eleanor meets in art class to her gorgeous sister Freya and wonderful, slightly eccentric mum Angela.I had to keep the book down a couple of times, but because I HAD TO KNOW what went wrong between Fin and Eleanor in the past, I finished reading it quite quickly. Now ten years on she met a kind and loving Mike and he married her despite knowing she was still pining for a man she had had a 4 day love affair with.

Their 12 year old daughter is, of course, not at all happy about the break-up of her parents' marriage and added to her burgeoning adolescence, tends to live her days in the fog of confusion.

The book was also injected with some humour, with entertaining support characters who were involved with interesting situations themselves. I loved Before I Saw You, and was thrilled to be asked to review the next release from Emily Houghton, Last Time We Met.Life is never as black and white as a romance novel, and the ending Mason gave her novel speaks of reality, as it was somewhat bittersweet. Mason slides in enough insight about life and love so that you will feel satisfied with the time spent! Never mind all the love and kindness he has showered her during their 10 year marriage she is still pining and fantasizing about her 4 day love/lust affair with Patrick.
