How can I train my dog to wear a muzzle?

These dogs (or strains and crosses of them) must: Be kept on a short strong lead by someone over the age of 16, who is capable of controlling them. Be muzzled whenever they are in a public place.

We recommend that you start to muzzle and lead train your XL Bully dog now so that they will be more comfortable with it by the time it comes into law on 31 st December. Breeding of XL Bully dogs should now stop, and you should look into arranging your dog to be neutered and microchipped if not already done. Stage 2: 31 December 2023 Hi, we are delighted with the muzzles, the dogs sit quietly to have them put on, they fit perfectly, don't inhibit them at all and they can pretty much function as normal, without the worry of a fight breaking out! Thanks again - great product. The UK Government is breaking up the law into different stages. From 31 December 2023 XL Bully dogs must be microchipped, kept on a lead and muzzled in public. During this time, you must also apply for a Certificate of Exemption for your dog as you have until 31 January 2024 to do so. If your dog is relaxed around other dogs, gradually introduce them with their muzzle on. When your dog interacts with other dogs, watch their body language to make sure everyone is relaxed and confident. Read our body language guide to learn the signs to look for.Muzzles are made with durable materials, that are still comfortable enough to be on your dogs’ snout. The materials for the muzzle portion differ from rubber, to nylon, to mesh, to wire, while the straps are generally high-quality nylon. The hardware on your muzzle will also offer a choice, usually between plastic and metal. Types Start by introducing the muzzle to your pet by placing it on the floor with treats around it. Make sure to give them their meals next to the muzzle for a few days. This will give your pet some positive association with the muzzle. Step 2: Nose in the muzzle Circumference - circumference around the snout one inch below the eye line in inches, should be measured with mouth a little open. Detail on how the current Dangerous Dogs banned breeds regulations work can be found here - Controlling your dog in public: Banned dogs - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk) When your dog is happy with wearing the muzzle, start fastening the muzzle and give your dog a treat. As soon as they finish their treat, take off the muzzle. Repeat this and increase the time that your pet wears the muzzle. Try to get them walking around the garden with the muzzle on. However, make sure to remove it if they are uncomfortable or stressed at any point. Step 5: Keep practicing
