These are the first Longmorn expressions that we have ever sampled and we have to say that we are impressed. It is easy to see why the malt from this distillery is so highly regarded amongst those in the industry and discerning whisky drinkers. The three malts in the this range are of excellent quality and all easy drinking but with plenty of character. Thoughts: I’m a big Longmorn fan, it’s often referred to as a “dressing whisky”, i.e. a very good malt that blenders like to use in their blends to up the quality. Their single malts are great (mostly independent), that said this particular malt feels slightly more aimed at the lower end of the range and possibly doesn’t show off Longmorn at it’s fullest, it feels just a smidge over engineered. Carrying no age statement at this price point I was hoping for just a wee bit more. Thoughts: A good quality Speyside dram. People say the 15yo was even better, I’ve never tried it, however this 16yo is a very pleasant dram, although the ending tannin could do with coming down one small notch for my personal tastes. I love that it’s 48% abv, a proper strength to give it more weight. The longer you spend with it the better it gets.

The Longmorn distillery was founded in 1894 by John Duff and is located about three miles south of Elgin in the Speyside region of Scotland. It is currently owned by Chivas Brothers and the malt produced there has long been used in a number of the most famous blends on the market. It is also one of the five whiskies that feature in the new Chivas Regal Ultis. The distillery has recently been expanded and now has an annual capacity of 4.5 million litres. Time spent enjoying the flavours on the nose are equally important as those on the palate. Raymond Davidson decided it was about time someone designed a proper whisky glass… The perfect glass for whisky was created and left to mature for some twenty years at the bottom of a filing cabinet. After adequate maturation, his sons Paul and Scott decided to take his design to the people who know best……

ProduktionsprocesIt was not an ideal time to build two new plants and in 1899 he was forced to sell to James Grant.Although Duff’s business was not sound, his whisky was and by the start of the 20th century Longmorn was a prize malt, used in a variety of blends including VAT 69 and Dewar’s. In 1920, the young Masataka Taketsuru, one of the fathers of Japanese whisky and founder of Nikka, spent a short period working in the distillery. The stills at Nikka’s two distilleries are said to be modelled on Longmorn’s. Finish: The barley notes continue on into a medium length, gently sweet finish, it warms your chest in a soothing but restrained way, the 16 years almost feeling slightly older than that. The oaky tannins dominate the dram as it fades into a dry end.
