Description

It was a small stone barn divided by a wooden partition into two rooms – The Infants and The Big Ones.

There is a story about two “grannies” who live next door to the Lee family, rivals and grudging enemies, their story made me think of two elderly women I knew when I was a child myself. Además, no sigue un orden estrictamente cronológico, cosa que le da un aire como de viñetas que van recomponiendo a fragmentos su niñez y preadolescencia. I was especially looking forward to it since this part of the series was based in one of my favorite places in England – the Cotswolds. Quintessentially English but not as purely delightful as I expected, this was still a book I valued for its characterization and its description of golden moments in memory. A racehorse was registered with the name Cider with Rosie in 1968 [7] and won some races in the 1970s, including the Cesarewitch of 1972.Of the land: potatoes are dipped and stripped clean from their coats of mud and glutinous beans are torn from their nests of wool. It is fortunate that Laurie Lee happened to be there to experience it and possessed the ability to document it with the vision of a poet before it disappeared. Parts of it were good, I especially liked the chapter on the grannies, only if the whole of it could have been like that?

The most memorable scenes for me are not the famous cider in the haystack but two big disappointments: when Laurie is deemed too old to sleep in his mother’s bed and then when he starts school and is told to sit in a particular place “for the present”, and is bitterly disappointed not to be given said present at the end of the day. The family also makes a four-mile hike to Sheepscombe to visit their grandfather and Uncle Charlie and his family. We are blessed that Laurie Lee was on hand, at the tail end of the old era, to chronicle it so memorably. Life in a rural community was as much about the daily life and way that the seasons slowed moved on slowly.
