Shadowgirls, Season 1 by David A. Rodriguez | Goodreads Shadowgirls, Season 1 by David A. Rodriguez | Goodreads

An unsettling and compelling ghost story, 'Shadow Girls' starts in the 1960s, where the narrator, Sally, is an ordinary teenager. She attends an unremarkable girls' school in Manchester, has a nice boyfriend whom she suspects she does not appreciate enough, and enjoys a little light rule-breaking with her loud mouthed friend Pamela. But then Pamela's feud with snooty classmate Sylvia begins to get out of hand, and rumours of strange phenomena start spreading amongst the girls. The events that follow will continue to haunt Sally well into her adulthood. Approval of God: Kunihiko Ikuhara was reportedly very happy with Rachael Lillis' performance as Utena. to Anthy] I understand now too. Why you sought me, and why I didn’t reject you. We were together in killing in the prince. Anthy: [ to Utena] I exploited your innocence. I encroached upon your kindness. I'm sorry, Utena. I've been unfair to you. I'm a dirty woman. I've betrayed you all along.leaving Ohtori] Now it's my turn to go. No matter where you are, I'll find you for sure. Wait for me, Utena. Ancient creatures died and left naught but fossil fuels, like coal and petroleum. Without that sacrifice, our present energy civilization would not exist. That sort of sacrifice is what is always demanded. Lighter and Softer: 'Shadowgirls' might not come across as all that cheery, what with the rampant carnage and monsters... until you compare it to the stuff that Lovecraft himself wrote. This series is vastly more idealistic than most works that connect to the Cthulhu Mythos. Teenage girls in mid-sixties Manchester, at a creepy old school, near a park called Piccadilly where a statue of Queen Victoria looms large. These girls have pictures of the Beatles and the Stones taped to their desks, wondering which ones they're going to marry. Birch absolutely nails the teenage girl banter, mannerisms, pranks, bullying, eye-rolling contempt for anything their parents, teachers, other adults might have to say. Eerie things happen. One of these teenagers, Sally, is our narrator.

This was all well and good, but so impressed was she by him that the princess vowed to become a prince herself one day. But was that really such a good idea? to Juri] So pretty. I loved the look in your eyes when I hurt you. I always thought you were stronger than anyone…and yet now you seem so weak. Adults Are Useless: They're not. At least those that don't need to be rescued from a Fate Worse than Death. Or the ones working for the bad guys. Hitting every point from horror to action to comedy to Fan Service, Shadowgirls is a unique but excellent work. Provides Examples Of:

Fantasy Kitchen Sink: Apparently not only this is a world of Cthulhu Mythos but also vampires, werewolves and aliens. And Lovecraft was a part of organization dedicated to pass the knowledge how to fight them to the rest of humanity, masked as a fiction. Magnum Opus Dissonance: The titular Utena is widely considered to be Rachael Lillis' best performance of her voice acting career ( The Movie especially), with approval from series creator Kunihiko Ikuhara to boot. As mentioned above, Lillis herself thinks she was miscast for the role. And as well-regarded her turn as Utena was, it's far from her most popular work.

The novel is one of those supernatural tales which never tries to explain itself or offer explanations, which can be frustrating, but is often better than the alternative. Sally is a likeable and believable narrator, and the writing flows well. The environment of the school is conjured up very vividly, as is the 1960s setting. Although I went to school several decades later, Birch captures the interactions and preoccupations of teenage girls very well and I could recognise them from my own experiences. She somehow can capture the underlying essence of a place and time in a way that goes beyond words. And with the RP that exists in the forums. Whenever you see characters like Hera and Tain popping up, that's a forumite crossover. Actor Allusion: Anthy's rabbit song in episode 7. The Japanese word for "rabbit" is "usagi," which was also the name of the main character in Sailor Moon, voiced by Juri's voice actress, Kotono Mitsuishi. I wonder if the flowers themselves are happy, being forced to last so long. Eternity doesn't exist in this world, does it? It's just that one could think that a heart that longs for eternity is beautifulSally is 15 and and attending an all girls school in the mid 1960s. She is friends with Pamela, a rough girl who no one else likes, and they both spend large parts of the day in the greenhouse on the roof. Their classmate, Sylvia, a prim and proper girl, is their enemy and constant source of their bullying. Many nights, Sally ends by staring out her window, looking at the train passing by. You stand here before me because of the illusion you've created! That's what allows you to enter the dueling arena! Am I wrong? In the end, you and I are the same. Utena: Listen, if you ever have a problem, come to me first. I want us to be friends like that. And someday, together... Having enjoyed two of Carol Birch’s earlier novels – Orphans of the Carnival and the Booker Prize shortlisted Jamrach’s Menagerie – I decided to try her new book, Shadow Girls. I enjoyed this one too, but it’s a very strange novel and not quite what I’d expected! http://www.brokenfrontier.com/headlines/details.php?id=3532 Broken Frontier Shadowgirls Anniversary report]

Dark Souls: The Complete Collection (Graphic Novel)

Didn't See That Coming: The Master is taken out by Chrissy when she goes Mama Bear regarding Mother Hydra's possession of her daughter. This is a slow burn of a read. There's an overall feeling of dread looming over the narrative. I kept waiting for the inevitable, unable to predict where the tale was heading. Good Is Not Nice: Played brutally straight, one of the better examples is after Paul stops Lin from killing the Bloodwatch member and then hooks them up to their own brainwashing equipment before leaving. Said equipment is described to leave the victim in a frenzied drugged-out state. My brother is my brother. I can't just ignore everything that's happened. Because I love him...because I love my brother!Creator's Favorite: From the English dub, Crispin Freeman (Touga), Amanda Goodman (Juri), and Lisa Ortiz (Shiori) have all named Utena as one of their favorite voiceover projects. I came to save you. I came here to meet you. So don't be afraid of this world where we'll meet...Himemiya! One day, Sally ventures (unauthorised, of course) up to the greenhouse on the roof alone. Or at least she thinks she's alone, until she sees Sylvia on the roof too. Sally hurries downstairs, afraid of Sylvia snitching, but Sylvia appears to be there as well. Touga: [ Stepping out of the shadows] Glad to hear that. I'm Touga Kiryuu, student council president, and totally normal boy. Kunihiko Ikuhara also wasn't fond of how the dub of the first episodes of Utena turned out to the point where he became much more involved in the English dub in later episodes as well as Adolescence of Utena.
