For the rest of the battle, at the start of each of your Command Phases the radioactive fallout further assails any opposing units that are still partially within their deployment zone, inflicting a further Mortal Wound and forcing a Battle-shock test on a 3+. The army in 9th Edition set up a ton of rules layering that seemed not that exciting to play with or against. Congratulations, you have 59 ranged attacks, Lethal Hits, full hit rerolls (reroll everything that’s not a 6), at AP-1. The more powerful enhancement lies in Necromechanic , which allows you to negate one failed save per battle round for a Legio Cybernetica or Adeptus Mechanicus Vehicle within 12” of the bearer.

All of these are pretty fun and this is another one I’m tempted to play with, leaning into lots of robots and vehicles stomping up the battlefield. For the majority of the Strategems they also have a new rule where if you target a unit of Skitarii with them you can actually have it affect a second unit of Skitarri within 6″, which is pretty cool. The Dunerider has had a bit of a rework and now has a cool fire support rule where if it scores any hits against a target, the unit that has disembarked from it gets to reroll wound rolls against that same target. After everything is deployed and you’ve determined who goes first, this enhancement lets you redeploy three units of Skitarii Infantry (including putting them into Strategic Reserves). It feels like its niche ends up being “all-rounder shooting” – the abilities aren’t locked as hard to specific Keywords as some other Detachments, and handing out re-rolls, Lethal Hits and Sustained Hits with relatively minimal overhead means you’re generally pretty good at withering the enemy away. Whether unleashing barrages of radioactive rounds or waves of burning plasma, the Adeptus Mechanicus are a force devoid of compassion, their sole purpose to annihilate those who challenge the divine machinery of the Omnissiah. The journey is worth it for such arcane technology as The Doom of Thorantus , which utterly cripples rival machine spirits. If you opt not to find archeotech parts during a battle you can instead declare you are looking for data – this data is accrued across games and once you think you have enough you can attempt to find the location of the legendary Archeotech, but there’s a risk reward element here as if you fail the test you will actually lose a piece of your precious data.

One of the downsides of the original version was that being battleshocked isnt always a massive downside in the first turn as you often can’t score in that turn anyway. Paired with the leadership debuff from a unit of Sicarian Infiltrators, this could be anywhere from a mild annoyance, to shutting down your opponent’s plans entirely.

Even the humble Pteraxii Sterylizor can hit AP-2 with their Phosphor Torch, which also ignores cover for extra punch.

Its stratagems seem good too, with a mixture of movement options and protection abilities that act like the Nurgle one from CSM. So unless you have been sleeping under a rock for the last few months, the new 10th edition of Warhammer 40k has landed to much fanfare. Those two stratagems also let some of the unsung heroes of the codex shine in ways that could catch your opponent off guard.

That last bit is the big improvement to the first half here – no longer can your opponent just ensure that anything they don’t care about getting shocked takes no damage out the gate. Within their imposing arsenal are the Skitarii—disciplined ranks of cybernetic soldiers, alongside formidable robots and servitors, all armed with weapons of devastating capabilities. For another wild combination of abilities, Clandestine Infiltrator grants both Infiltrators and Scout 6”. This last one would be great, except that it not only costs 2CP, but it also can only be used on friendly units that disembarked from a transport this turn. The bulk of these Stratagems are melee buffs, with a couple of defensive buffs thrown in the mix to help your units fall into melee.

The good news is that these do still only require you or your target to be “within” rather than “wholly within” the specified area, making the effect a bit easier to turn on.
