My calculations are that if you can get red diesel then the cost of running a 2KW diesel heater is a quarter of the price to a third of the price of gas bottles and probably half the cost of LPG. A non-plumbed-in heater requires extra space for a separate fuel tank. Whilst these are more common due to them being easier to install, I would also advise seeing a professional when dealing with fuel and carbon monoxide. There are many different options when it comes to van life heaters, ranging from portable electric heaters to cozy wood stoves. In this article we’ll be discussing diesel heaters, which are considered by many seasoned van lifers to be the best option for staying toasty; no matter how cold it gets outside.Big heat for a little unit. Even though 2kW is the smallest diesel heater, they’re capable of producing a lot of warmth. Most (but not all) people who’ve installed them even in 21 ft caravans say they’re fine. In addition my gas heater just doesn't cut it in the winter even on full blast. So a Diesel heater has been long on the cards. As with most things van-related, everyone has an opinion about what makes the best heater for van life. If you’re driving a diesel camper van, though, using a diesel air heater is almost a no-brainer. Let’s look at the three main reasons why you might want to consider installing a diesel heater in your van. Diesel heater parts on a campervan table. Make sure the air inlet filter isn’t pointed in the direction of travel. This will prevent buildup that could clog the pipe. Sure, it’s a cheap Chinese made version of a Webasto but if it works then why not? Just be aware that the lifetime of this product may likely be much shorter than a Webasto or Eberspacher. We bought this heater under the assumption that it may only last 1-2 years, after which we may need to replace it. On our heater, I have recently fitted a new design of silencer which not only reduces the noise level but also changes the note of the exhaust which is more pleasant on the ears. Diesel heaters draw fuel from your tank, as well as cold air from outside into a combustion chamber. The diesel fuel and air mixture ignites under pressure, increasing the temperature of the outer combustion chamber and heating the attached heat exchanger. Less Fuel Consumption: diesel heaters are economical due to their design and slow fuel consumption rate.

Camper heater FAQs

I was planning on installing a diesel heater so I needed to find out: what size diesel heater do I need? Do I need a 2kW or 5kW diesel heater?

This isn’t really an issue, as long as your diesel heater is the right size for your van. All diesel heaters are remarkably fuel efficient, usually using around 0.1 – 0.5 liters of fuel per hour. Don’t worry about the heater draining your fuel tank, either: diesel heaters shutoff automatically when the tank is around three-quarters empty. Cost As with any appliance you use in your campervan, it is very important that you regularly maintain your diesel heater and we always recommend that this should be carried out by a qualified professional. How much fuel does a diesel heater use? The MV Airo includes an upgraded control switch, offering more flexibility than those supplied with other makes of diesel heater. It can work either as a thermostat (so it switches off when a temperature is reached) or to set a constant heat output from 0.9 to 2kw (so it works constantly at an appropriate output, and does not cut in and out through the night). They use inductive (brushless) electric motors designed for uninterrupted operation for 12,000 hours.

Carbon monoxide poisoning is no joke, and if this gas accumulates in a small space it can be deadly. That’s why it’s a really good idea to install a carbon monoxide detector in your camper van, especially if you’re using propane for cooking and heating. Depending on the space you are trying to heat, the max heat output will change. For a small caravan, motorhome or campervan then, we recommend a 2kw, most people will go for a 5kw, we believe this will be efficient enough for most options. The magic happens when the diesel heater draws fuel from your vehicle’s tank and mixes it with air from the surrounding environment. This combustible blend is ignited within a combustion chamber, producing heat. That heat is then transferred to the air, which is blown into your motorhome or campervan through a series of ducts or a single outlet. Eco-Friendly:** Our heater boasts low emissions and fuel consumption, meeting Euro IV engine emissions requirements. Now it’s time to put your feet up and watch our latest video of Mike unboxing and explaining how an MV Airo diesel heater works… he’ll help you to understand the ‘why, what and how’ of this type of heater. Happy watching :)

Re-write the way you live.

Because van diesel air heaters are fairly compact, finding a place to install one shouldn’t be too difficult. It’s best to shoot for a location that’s protected and enclosed, such as a storage cabinet. It doesn’t have a thermostat, rather it has different heat settings which can be adjusted on the digital control panel or via the remote control. There is also the option to set a timer – instant heat from the comfort of your van bed!
