The Caran d'Ache + Paul Smith limited edition collection consists of six bicolour 849 ballpoint pens. Each pen comes with a metal box bearing the colours of the model it contains. This flagship Caran d'Ache model is a champion of metamorphosis, available in multiple colours, and is part of our limited edition collections. The new Caran d'Ache + Paul Smith collection bears witness to the know-how of the Geneva-based company, an expert in stationery accessories and supplies for the Fine Arts. We have taken up the new technical challenge to affix 12 new colours to the hexagonal body of the 849 pen and to their accompanying metal boxes.Each 849 pen and metal box in this collaboration with the British designer comes with the inscription “Caran d'Ache + Paul Smith” in golden letters, a seal befitting of a timeless collection. The bicolour design of each pen is achieved by lacquering one colour all over the body. We affixed the second colour to the body of each pen with the use of pad printing. The curious part to me, however, is that while Caran d’Ache released this pen as what they called the “849 Rollerball,” some retailers are actively promoting this pen as the “XL Ballpoint.” The reason is simple enough: the pen takes a Parker-style refill, and there are enough gel, ballpoint, and rollerball options out there to place the 849 Rollerball in the same ballpark as versatile workhorses like the Retro 51 Tornado and Baron Fig Squire, both of which also accept ballpoint and gel Parker-style refills. Today I’ll take a closer look and talk a bit about why the 849 Rollerball has become one of my most-used everyday writers over the past few weeks.
