Sanderson, Peter (2008). "1970s". In Gilbert, Laura (ed.). Marvel Chronicle A Year by Year History. London, United Kingdom: Dorling Kindersley. p.189. ISBN 978-0-7566-4123-8. In this issue the great longtime Daredevil artist Gene Colan was succeeded by a new penciller who became a star himself: Frank Miller. Unfortunately, all the weaknesses evident in Miller’s Daredevil have followed him to his new project, many in amplified form. Ronin further erodes Miller’s already precarious position as one of the very few major artists to emerge from mainstream comics since the early ’70s. His work is undercut by grievous flaws, and they are flaws that appear to be part and parcel of Miller’s artistic gestalt, rather than technical difficulties that might be corrected in the future. Ronin provoked in me not only disappointment, but also a sense of pessimism with regards to Miller’s future career: he seems headed straight for an arid no man’s land of mannered, disjunctive storytelling put in the service of second- and third- hand experience. Ronin is but the latest stop on the way. Set in a bleak future, Ronin brings together many common aspects of dark science fiction, from the giant untouchable corporation to the artificial intelligence with an agenda of its own. Interspersed with this is a traditional Japanese story of a fallen Samurai looking to restore his honour by avenging the death of his master, clearly inspired by Koike and Kojima‘s Lone Wolf and Cub. The artwork in the comic is done by Frank himself. I really love Frank's artwork and while I don't think that here it's at it's best, I think it's really great. Frank uses a LOT of cross-hatching and while in general, I don't always love it, I think that it works very well here and it makes things look very detailed. Also, the action is very well drawn (and written), which is great, because it makes it very enjoyable. Frank Miller does an amazing job with panel layouts in this comic and also, he does an even better job at "directing" everything within the panels. Frank's great "directing" abilities are really apparent here. Almost all of the panels look very cinematic in such a way that it makes me immediately think how the comic would look if I made it into a film. The coloring in this comic is done by Lynn Varley, who does a great job. Her coloring really elevates the artwork and it's beautiful in every single panel. Another great thing in this comic is the lettering. It's very good, because it really fits perfectly with the style of Frank Miller's artwork. Decoy Protagonist: The story plays with it a bit as Billy seemingly dies towards the end and Casey is essentially the hero of the story anyway.

Miller's work on Daredevil was characterized by darker themes and stories. This peaked when in #181 (April 1982) he had the assassin Bullseye kill Elektra, [26] and Daredevil subsequently attempt to kill him. Miller finished his Daredevil run with issue #191 (February 1983), which he cited in a winter 1983 interview as the issue he is most proud of; [20] by this time, he had transformed a second-tier character into one of Marvel's most popular. Additionally, Miller drew a short Batman Christmas story, "Wanted: Santa Claus – Dead or Alive", written by Dennis O'Neil for DC Special Series #21 (Spring 1980). [27] This was his first professional experience with a character with which, like Daredevil, he became closely associated. At Marvel, O'Neil and Miller collaborated on two issues of The Amazing Spider-Man Annual. The 1980 Annual featured a team-up with Doctor Strange [28] while the 1981 Annual showcased a meeting with the Punisher. [29] I will give this book one (1) caveat—the action scenes with no words, hardly any characters, and just straight battle moments are done very well. The colors are great, and it reads like an action film. So when the book is not being itself, it is impressive. But again, if I like the book best when it's like a movie, it's not a good book. After the End: New York is a wasteland. While businessmen from Japan are able to fly over, it's likely the rest of the world isn't better off.
