Reading the story from the paranormal investigator's view reminds me of those true haunting books and as I became engrossed in the story I would sometimes forget that this was a work of fiction as that is how close to the real thing it almost seems. I listened to the audio book version of this story. Narrated by Hannibal Hills, the audio is just over 8 hours long. Hills does a great job of voice acting. I enjoyed his reading of the prequel, Inside: Perron Manor, and his performance was just as scary this time! As for the story, I enjoyed it from start to finish. The characters were a bit annoying at times and their decisions were total crap....but I don't think I would make great choices in a similar situation either!

At first the ghosts, or demon spirits as the Warren investigators thought of them, were harmless. Described variously as opaque or somewhat solid in appearance, there were many spirits present in the old homestead. One ghost smelled of flowers while another would gently kiss the girls goodnight in their beds every night. Another appeared to be a small, young male that the girls would watch, mesmerized, push toy cars about the room propelled by an invisible hand.

When we begin, Chloe and her younger sister Sarah, have inherited the Manor from their reclusive Uncle Vincent. The last tragedy recorded there was when Chloe was only six years old, and was staying there as her parents helped her Uncle and his partner, Marcus.

This is the most haunted house in Britain... Yet are things lurking inside the house really the masterminds in control; and are they the real supernatural power to fear? Are there more than mere spirits roaming the rooms and halls of Perron Manor? It's chilling. There are just a couple things that bothered me: Continuous repeat response; and what I call Rosemary's baby syndrome-- When the story reaches the night of the murders is when the book literally goes into maniac overdrive as more things start happening in the book which drives the tension and suspense up several notches! Why you should buy this: I enjoyed this read. I’d peg it at a middle of the road haunted house story for me. I wanted to know what was happening, but it took a bit to get the ball rolling and ultimately, the pay off at the end works but was more of a set up for the next release. Mountford does deliver some really eerie scenes, so rest assured you’ll be creeped out, but for me personally, I wanted more finality of certain things and a less open ending. I like the way Lee tells a story, you can tell he's not writing it thinking ‘I better be careful how I go about wording certain situations’, he just goes for it and writes the story exactly as he wants to tell it; not only is it refreshing but it's also really enjoyable to read.

Serving as a prequel novella for the upcoming trilogy of the same name, Inside does it’s job as both a fictional non fiction text (I know, weird way to write that), and a literary teaser of things to come. This prequel delves into the history of the fictional Perron Manor, the horrific occurrences at the house on Halloween 1982 and describes a 2014 weekend investigation of the home by a team of paranormal researchers. I listen to a lot of podcasts, and this story had the tone of a paranormal podcast with the added horror aspects that fiction can add. Loved it! What I liked: Perron Manor is a massive house on an acreage near a small town. The house has history. Known history. In fact, so well known, books and paranormal investigators have all weaved its way into the lore. The story itself follows Sarah and Chloe, sisters who’ve inherited Perron Manor after their uncle passed away. They move out to the old property, excited to be owners of a mansion, even if it needs some work to update it. Chloe has an infant daughter, Emma as well as her mildly disgruntled husband Andrew.
