To put into perspective the kind of filmmaker Hill was during that era in his career, actress Isabelle Adjani once commented “…he (Hill) is wonderful, very much in the tradition of Howard Hawks, lean and spare.” Lean and spare is exactly how I’d describe The Driver, which is a whole lot of style mixed with noir-style characterizations that toe the line between contemporary and vintage. Add Ryan O’Neal at his foppish and steely best to the fold and you have a leading man that fits naturally into the mode of film noir. On the other hand, casting O’Neal as a cold-blooded professional criminal has always been a far more controversial decision. Hill initially developed the project with Steve McQueen in mind, but despite the fact that they had previously worked together in different capacities on The Getaway, The Thomas Crown Affair, and Bullitt, McQueen decided that he had done enough car films at that stage of his career. Hill’s Hard Times lead Charles Bronson also turned it down, since the two had a bit of a falling out over the final editing of that film. Ryan O’Neal was a reliable box office draw at that point, but he was hardly anyone’s first choice for this kind of project. While he did receive a fair amount of criticism in 1978, that’s partly due to the fact that the role was such a departure for him, and it’s hard for people to accept familiar actors playing against type. Yet with the benefit of hindsight, he’s every bit the equal of Dern in the film. There was always an impassiveness to O’Neal’s face that works perfectly for The Driver; McQueen’s innate charm would have actually worked against the effectiveness of the character. His prowess allows him to charge robbers a high price, and his reputation only grows with each robbery. The Detective ( Bruce Dern, Silent Running) is hot on the Driver’s heels, but can never get quite near. The (card) Player ( Isabelle Adjani, Possession) sees the Driver’s participation in a heist, but the Detective can only chase her up after she has been paid off by the Driver to tell the Detective she saw nothing. It’s quite easy to follow in terms of plot.
