Stephanie Garber’s storytelling is truly magical and this fairytale world and her characters are so. Her prose is engaging, easy to understand, and every bit as whimsical and magical as the Magnificent North. It’s all so confusing to me and all my emotions are so conflicted but I think it’s very important that Jacks was actually keeping Evangeline alive all those times because he LOVES HER. This book had things that surprised me, magic/fairytale vibes that dazzled me, and such high stakes that I read this book so fast.

Jacks intends to use them to go back to the moment he met Donatella, the first girl who was immune to his lethal kiss and made his heartbeat. So, in the beginning when I was getting used to the characters again, I didn't like her at first (probably because I wanted Jacks all to myself but we don't talk about my unhealthy attachment to fictional characters okay-) but she is an amazing protagonist. As she visits her, LaLa announces she is engaged and moving houses, even though it is her fate to be left at the altar.

He finally tells her what the stones can do: they can allow a person to go back to a moment in their past.

Before she comes to any conclusion, the door to the dining hall slams open and reveals a gravely wounded Jacks, gold and red blood spreading on his clothes. Am sobbing over that ending, it is like my heart has been shredded 😭💔 I didn't know this would happen to both of my favourite characters. It depicts a little dragon with the luck stone, a skull for the truth stone, the mirth stone atop a flower garden, and the youth stone with a fiery shield. Morning after reading this and I’m suffering from such intense heartbreak, I can’t focus on anything else.

A small part of me wanted more of the supporting characters, but at the same time this is truly Evangeline and Jacks’ story.

Hoping Tiberius knows something about the four missing stones, Evangeline plans a secret visit to his prison tower. ALL THE YEARNING BTWN JACKS AND EVANGELINE SDKHGKS IT WAS TORTURE READING i love them🥹 and just the so many reveals its amazing especially that last one at the end ? Winning at love was less about succeeding in a battle and more about continuing to fight, to choose the person you loved as the one you were willing to die for, over and over.
