Fantasía cínica para adultos en un mundo con personajes detallados, matizados, intrincados y que comienza fuerte. If you let me do the talking, I’ll make sure you miss the pennycock with the pizzle-itch and get the best wine in the merchant’s barrel.

We accompany a thief, hence the title of the book, as he is drawn into events greater and more dangerous than anything he has ever experienced before, and is not quite prepared for. Buehlman had a fantastic way of making each character memorable, they were all eclectic enough to stand out, even those who only appeared for a brief scene or two. This book is incredibly fast-paced, and it feels like there is a new adventure in each chapter, which does not leave the reader any time to contemplate the broader scope of this story and world. What makes these characters stand out is Kinch's relationships with them throughout the adventure that ensues after the novel's beginning showdown. As much as I hoped he’d move his cupped palm down like he was snuffing a candle, I knew he would jab his thumb forward and the attack would start. Buehlman has raised the bar on what makes a special fantasy debut, and not since Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames have I been so enamored from cover to cover. Kinch Na Shannack owes the Takers Guild a small fortune for his education as a thief, which includes (but is not limited to) lock-picking, knife-fighting, wall-scaling, fall-breaking, lie-weaving, trap-making, plus a few small magics. The day a magicker peeks into the thought of commoners for some thin-skinned duke or king will be a bad day.

I’d like to tell you it had belonged to my da or something, but my da was a sad bastard miner and couldn’t play the arse-horn after a quart of beans and cabbage. If everybody’s wearing clean linen and silk and looking down at you squirming in your bassinet, you’ll have a very different life than if the first thing you see when you open your eyes is a billy goat. In fact, I often failed and laughed my butt off, much to the concern and chagrin of my family and/or coworkers who were around at the time.Cadoth was the first town west of the Forest of Orphans and the last town in Holt proper before you get to the yet gloomier forests and broad highlands of Norholt. It's action-packed and imaginative with huge standout set pieces that lead to a fulfilling crescendo where all the threads are neatly wrapped up. The Blacktongue Thief features a world with murderous trees, mutant magical beasts, magicked tattoos, an upside down tower, krakens, goblins and giants. He can pay off his debt by doing jobs for the Guild but at the start of the book, Kinch and the group of thieves he travels with have chosen the wrong mark.

The story follows Kinch Na Shannack, a trained thief whose prestigious tutelage has earned him an immense debt to The Taker’s Guild. Monarchy is a bad system because, no matter how smart you are, you can still squirt a moron out of your plumbing.

I had no shot at the Spanth, who kept her shield raised toward me even as she lopped Spear’s hand off below the wrist. I was a big fan of the protagonist, the world-building, the writing and I am already looking forward to book 2!

Beside me, Nervous cried out, “ Awain Baith,” Galtish for “death-bird,” and dropped his bow and ran, his older sister turning tail with him, leaving me the only archer in the trees. Some of my most favourite parts early on in the novel consisted of interactions between the Knight Galva, and Kinch. The author reads the audiobook and gives a fantastic performance, even though the audio quality isn't so good. Funny what the mind keeps close—I glimpsed the shield closer now and saw its central steel boss was wrought in the shape of a blowing storm cloud’s face, like the kind on the edge of a map. The quest premise that Kinch and Galva took reminded me of Clay and Gabe’s journey in Kings of the Wyld; the jokes and senses of humor Buehlman included into the narrative were so delightful. I’ve struggled with how to start this review of Christopher Buehlman’s The Blacktongue Thief because I want to give it the recognition it deserves.
