About this deal

Also, there’s a talking cat-like creature who was so adorable that I want a book just from her perspective. But the moment I pressed this tool into the bone, I was writing on the life of someone, no matter that they were half a world away.

Four major constructs that use hundreds of shards are the empire's ministers, while simpler constructs serve as dock clerks or spies. With stunningly intricate world-building that leaps off the page and characters who are so vibrant that you wish they were real, it grabs you by the heart and the throat from the first pages and doesn't let go until long after it's over. A fascinating world with characters who have deep foundations, and who will quickly capture readers' hearts . They can look like animals, or, well, they can take any shape the creator wishes— they can EVEN take the shape of humans— or humanoid shapes even! Adam Weller, writing for Fantasy Book Review, gave the book a score of 9/10, concluded that " The Bone Shard Daughter is full of surprises. They appreciate the character development, and the unique and clever development of the bone shard magic of the Drowning Empire universe. My favorite works tend to be those that combine the tropes of both, especially sci-fi with grand, beautiful worldbuilding. Bone Shard magic is comprised of just that— bone shards— and every single citizen is required by law to provide one to the Emperor. Small note: This was marketed to me as a book with a f/f relationship and a book similar to The Poppy War, and both of these made me even more excited to read it. Stewart has gone for a bold, tricky form: the author ushers in readers through four different storylines from four different narrators, which she juggles with the confidence of a circus performer on a tightrope.

The novelty of the concepts takes a little getting used to, but once you’re settled, you just can’t not enjoy this. MY GOD THE MAGIC SYSTEM IS SO FREAKIN’ UNIQUE (AND A BIT CREEPY AND INHUMANE— but hey, thats just my opinion). Phalue—daughter and heir to the island’s governor—is wondering if the ravine between her and her partner Ranami will ever be small enough to close. Human hands were attached to the end of each of its spindly legs, and an old woman’s adorned the abdomen. Like Link in the Legend of Zelda, she steals keys to the palace’s many locked doors that hold numerous secrets to Bone Shard Magic. It also follows three other characters—Phalue, Ranami, and Sand—whose paths weave intricately with the others to create an overall compelling narrative.

A complex and dark tapestry of a fantasy woven through with brilliant world-building, deep intrigue, and incredible heart - Megan E. I admit that the first few chapters are a little confusing and it was harder to get into the story, but after the 20% mark, things get more exciting and the characters slowly start to interact with each other, creating one complex storyline instead of 4 different stories. But the mysteries behind such power are dark and deep, and wielding her family’s magic carries a great cost.I didn’t want to realize how much I’ve hurt the people around me, and that’s what confronting my beliefs meant. There's a bold, ambitious imagination at work here - and this is a world you'll want to linger in - M. Lin is the Emperor’s daughter, but a mysterious illness has stolen her childhood memories and her status as heir to the empire. Phalue, a governor’s daughter is brusque and confident; her lover Ranami, a peasant girl is introspective and resolute. The Bone Shard Daughter was nominated for Goodreads Choice Awards for Fantasy [7] and for Debut Novel (2020), [8] [9] the 2021 Compton Crook Award, [10] and for a BookNest Award for Best Traditionally Published Novel (2020).But it also pulls at your emotions through great character work, strong world-building, stomach-turning revelations, and hopeful paths toward the future. Phalue is a bit upset about the way her father’s citizens are living, as they are currently tied into a really bad deal with the governor and they’re stuck living in poverty. Strange monsters--some friendly, most not--unsettling rituals, and a cast of wonderful characters trying to fix a world on the brink of shattering, The Bone Shard Daughter is utterly absorbing. He luckily finds a weird animal that will become his loyal companion, and I need to say that I just loved the relationship between Jovis and Mephis, it is one of my favorite parts. This is a story that focuses on power and responsibility, while exploring the concept of identity, autonomy and choices.
