About this deal

The Bone Shard War, the last book in The Drowning Empire trilogy, excelled in its construct and beauty.

I really enjoyed The Bone Shard Daughter and The Bone Shard Emperor so I was really excited to recieve this ARC! On our site, you can find not only book reviews but author interviews, cover reveals, excerpts from books, acquisition announcements, guest posts by your favourite authors, and so much more. I do not think I would end up enjoying The Bone Shard War, the concluding installment of The Drowning Empire trilogy, this much without doing a reread to refresh my connection with the story, world, and characters first. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. I continued to be in awe of the bone shard magic, and loved that so many unanswered questions from book one get answers here. Publishers really need to start including mini summaries of the key points of the previous novels in fantasy series. Lin Sukai has won her first victory as Emperor, but the future of the Phoenix Empire hangs in the balance – and Lin is dangerously short of allies.

One of the most pleasant surprises I had with The Bone Shard War was the satisfying and emotional ending. I think, in all honesty, the first book of this trilogy will always be my favourite; Lin sneaking furtively through the palace, desperately trying to find out the truth; Jovis rescuing Mephi and the each new discovery about him. It’s also where I fell in love with the characters who started out with such big and honourable ideals.

Nils: I was most surprised by Nisong as she was a character who I had previously hated, believing her to be evil, yet in this finale I grew to really sympathise and even become fond of her.Her favourite authors include Jen Williams, Anna Stephens and Joe Abercrombie; her favourite castles include Kidwelly, Carreg Cennen and Pembroke. I enjoyed every page of it, the bits of humour, the magic, the heartbreak and drama and embraced the odd tear I shed in the reading of it. But his relationship with Melphi is everything, and he has another friendship that developed in the story that I ended up loving. Yet where Stewart takes them in the next two books is incredible too, the entire Empire changes by the end and the scope of this arc awed me.

Jovis is, for the bigger part of the novel (for plot reasons) powerless to act and more in his head being desperate because of it and Lin.

The Bone Shard War is the epic finale to the unmissable, action-packed and magic-laced Drowning Empire series. These characters go on such a journey and watching that unfold in each book was both heartwarming and heartbreaking. Nils: I think her main problem was when you’re an Empress there is no right thing and every mistake you make has catastrophic consequences. Auch wenn ich mir wieder mehr Tiefe im Umgang mit dem speziellen Magiesystem, der Knochensplittermagie, gewünscht hätte, wurde ich gut unterhalten. You say you’re doing this for the greater good, but how many tyrants have used that to justify the pain they’ve visited on innocents?
