Andy Lamberton has done a masterful job, through a wonderfully imaginative medium, of bringing 'exile' to life as a contemporary and not merely a historical reality. And then she finds a strange coded note which seems to link Sukie to Devon, and to something dark and impossibly dangerous. And then they have to get Sheridan down the stairs to his carriage, a tremendously difficult operation. The recipient gets to break the seals to find the greatest gift: their loved one's encouraging words whenever they need them the most.

And the correspondents themselves clearly realised that they were playing with fire, that this was a loose cannon – and as such all the more fascinating. In Keats’ letters, for instance, he is endlessly saying adieu in a very self-consciously Romantic way.
