Heroes is stand-alone, but even for experienced players, I would probably still recommend the base set first. First, if you were to come by on most Sunday afternoons, you would find me, pencil in hand, working through the Puzzle Island section of the Chicago Tribune. The version I have includes the skills pack, which lets you spend the coins you earn, which is great. My game experience as-is is pretty much where I want it to be, and should it ever get stale, I have this expansion to fall back on. Before the game starts, choose if you want to play with the basic map, or the more advanced map with a chasm in the middle. Also, during my second game as I was furiously erasing a feature that I didn’t like the placement of, the eraser portion of my pencil broke off. Much like they did with Roll Player and creating characters, Jordy has managed to distill the thrill of crafting maps for your roleplaying group and made it into a game all unto itself. Building around the volcano can be risky, as the spread of lava can destroy spaces you might need filled with terrain. If you ever reach or exceed that number with a card flip, that season comes to an end once everyone draws in their features on their maps. This includes regular gamers and those who are new to the scene and they have all enjoyed it and appreciate it really quickly. This means each card will score twice and that you know when they will score, allowing you to plan ahead.

It's not unusual to start the game using the iconography the game suggests before you end up spending some real time illustrating the map as you add more and more to the world in front of you, so you end up with a specific story where you can see the struggle for players to try mitigate the mistakes or lack of planning from the early stages of the game. Each player receives a pencil and the same double-sided map, agreeing before the start of the game which side to use.

So you can plan for the next round or even the round after that by foregoing the current round scoring.

The player with the most points at the end of the game is announced the winner, though its interesting that scoring for the rounds take into account previous scored squares, so as rounds progress, the soring will increase. There's something rather endearing about allowing someone to put their particular stamp on a board game.At the start of the game, four objectives are chosen, and in each season of the year, two of the objectives score, and each objective will score twice in the game.
