Illustrations in the text by Gareth Adamson; Edward Bawden; William Fenton; MacDonald Gill; Eric Ravilious; Peter Roberson; Bruce Roberts; Ray Tooby; R. Numerous illustrations, mostly in colour, including all the plates from the original edition of the legendary High Street. A note on the transmatic dust jacket: the 1930s had seen a series of developments in the technology of plastics, and the production of cellophane had been one. The first chapter concentrates on his childhood, his early days as an art student at Eastbourne and at the RCA, and his early mural commissions.

The book was never reprinted because the original plates were destroyed in a bombing raid in 1942 (in the same year Ravilious, who was a captain in the Royal Marines and an official war artist, was killed in action). VERY GOOD CONDITION, tight solid and clean- - dust jacket is browned with age and has light edgewear, the dust jacket now protected by new clear mylar cover. The village is known for its textile heritage, and Tschudi would briefly experiment with designs for textiles when she put certain of her images onto pillow and cushion cases. The book is in Puffin Picture Book format, but with an accompanying wrap around dustwrapper inside which is told the story of White Horses and the journey towards this book.Tonk’s teaching bred a formidable tenacity in his students, and a diversity of approach which was apparent throughout Shephard’s career. Eric Ravilious will be welcomed by all those with an interest in an artist whose imagination was backed by great skill and a sharp eye for the unusual. A joyful and celebratory gift book devoted to the work of the much-loved English artist Eric Ravilious (1903-1942) and the influence of natural forms and themes in his work. This features Ravilious' haunting images of the Sussex and Wiltshire Downs, in high-quality reproduction, with accompanying text describing the background to each painting. Author James Russell sets out to discover the places that inspired Ravilious, explore the remarkable books he illustrated and meet the people he portrayed.

Often described as a particularly ‘English’ artist, key to his style was an ability to convey in watercolour the mild vagaries of the British climate. Watercolourist, wood engraver, lithographer and mural decorator, Eric Ravilious was born in Acton but grew up in Eastbourne, Sussex, where he studied until receipt of a scholarship to the Royal College of Art. Here's a selection of the original lithographs, printed at The Curwen Press in 1938 (and not to be confused with the modern digital/giclée reproductions in circulation). Good-humoured, unpretentious and a bit eccentric, it's more like having a well-read friend than a subscription to a literary review. In Munich, however, Wadsworth spent as much time exploring non-technical drawing, printmaking and painting as attending to the subject for which he was enrolled. It also provokes the inevitable emotions one feels when considering the output of one who died too young,as well as tantalising questions about the work which might have been. The third chapter looks at the pre-war watercolours of interiors, villages, landscapes, boating scenes, etc, some of which include his most famous images. It is both interesting and well presented and it introduced me to an artist I had never known about so I thank him for opening another window on the world of a ninety-year-old always ready for new experiences ! This is largely because so many of his watercolours (he hardly ever painted in oils) have become available in a series of books, 'Ravilious in Pictures' edited by his son James, as well as in high-quality prints and greetings cards.

An exceptionally gifted sketcher, Underwood was awarded a scholarship to the Royal Academy where he studied life-drawing under the tutelage of E. Here, for one year prior to the beginning of the war, Vaughan and Passmore would reside, painting, listening to music and visiting the ballet. The book analyses Ravilious' different spheres of activity in turn, covering his education and formative influences, his mural painting, his printmaking and illustration, his work as leader in forming a new style of watercolour painting between the wars and his final period as an official War Artist. It has a loose cover that opens and tells the story behind the Ravilious dummy and how this new book was produced. From about 1934 some publishers in the UK had experimented with the material as dust jackets over decorated boards.

Slightly Foxed brings back forgotten voices through its Slightly Foxed and Plain Foxed Editions, a series of beautifully produced little pocket hardback reissues of classic memoirs, all of them absorbing and highly individual. Directly after school she noticed an advertisement in The Studio inviting applications for a training programme specialising in linocuts at The Grosvenor School of Art, London. This is followed by two illustrated essays, "The Making of High Street" and "High Street at Seventy" by Powers and Russell, respectively.

Ravilious is well known to a circle of collectors and admirers who feel no need to explain his work.Together with this new Alan Powers book the two provide an excellent and detailed account of Ravilious as an artist and as a person.
