Description

There is one line about how one servant (who never has a physical description) doesn't want to visit the South. At first I started to get bogged down with the talk of magic spells and related genealogy but as I became more invested in the characters, I seemed to understand those things better. As soon as Merritt enters the house he knows it is no ordinary house, as it contorts around him and traps him in his very own house of horrors. But, it isn't long until the genius of why this is needed comes to light and the story-line gels into a right rollicking mystery/suspense!

In a Nutshell: All things bright and beautiful, some creatures great and small, many things wise and wonderful – the author included them all. One of the things I really enjoy about this author is the multiple interesting and complex magical systems created for each story arc. This is a time for Hulda Larkin from the Boston Institute for the Keeping of Enchanted Rooms to come to help and take care of the new resident or perhaps Whimbrel House itself! This was the perfect story to wrap up the spooky season, and I especially loved the audiobook narration as well. The majority of the books reviewed at this site have been provided for free by publishers, authors, or other third parties like NetGalley or Edelweiss. Then comes the newly hired maid, Beth, with her own abilities and foresight, and Baptiste, who grunts and lumbers, but cooks the most delicious meals. If anyone knows a non-historical work by her, I would try it, bc she has a brilliant imagination, I think. It straddles so many genres so eloquently and smoothly that readers of each can savor every word, from historical to fantasy to mystery and romance.

The main plot arc takes some meandering twists and turns, slowly revealing the horror of the identity of the villain and his nefarious ambitions, but ultimately comes to an exciting climax and conclusion. I had a little trouble getting into the characters at the start, but by the end, I’ve found much to love about both Merrit and Hulda. There are twists and turns, some of which are expected, but they all lead to a lovely ending after a suitably thrilling climax. And despite a seemingly vast world, she insists on telling stories that are very similar at their core. The people here were as ordinary as they came, dregs from other countries with little to no importance, clamoring together to make a better life for themselves. Holmberg…has a deft hand portraying internal emotional responses…Keeper of Enchanted Rooms combines lighthearted entertainment and nail-biting excitement. But when he gets to the house he realizes something is very wrong… shifting rooms, melting ceilings, and his new residence doesn’t seem to want him to leave.

She is a tamer of possessed and enchanted houses and sees it as her duty to preserve the disappearing magic in such ancient houses. This book ended up on my list of favorite books I’ve read in 2022, and it's near the very top of that list. It has its minor flaws, but the memorable characters, the innovative storyline, and the smooth writing style all ensured that this was a solid read for me.

The plot moves along well and the characters grow and develop (growing on the reader as well) as the plot progresses. I wholeheartedly suggest this book, especially to everyone who enjoyed or is currently desiring the blend of historical fiction and fantasy in magical language! One of the best reads of this year, so happy there will be more stories of this fantastic gang, Heir of Uncertain Magic. Hulda’s “dictionary-style” language is written and utilised wonderfully in the plot without making it seem odd.Honestly, I can't even tell you what really happened in this book and I probably should have put it down without it being finished. But things are not so easy, Whimbrel House isn't like others, some things are in the shadows buried, hidden and they are all in danger! Her imagination is wonderful, so I would actually consider another title from her, but not if it’s HF. While most meanings are guessable if you know their meanings in English, it's worth going through the list as they come up regularly in the plot. A trio of narrators makes this lighthearted historical fantasy with touches of mystery and romance a delight.
