About this deal

When local butcher Jamie MacRaith arrives at the half-ruined keep in January 1921 to deliver a slab of beef for Hogmanay, he discovers almost half a dozen dead bodies laid out in a disturbing formation around a group of standing stones, each missing an eye. Yet as Eve's story of the years leading up the massacre intertwines with Dinah's account of the aftermath, a darker, stranger truth begins to emerge. Inside this commune, Uncle oversees the lives of two adult women, two young teenage girls, and two children. In fact, I listened to a couple of the last chapters at least three times, trying to capture it all. Harsh punishments like “Wane,” in which a child’s mouth is sealed with pine tar before they are essentially thrown in a basement for days, or “Shunning,” in which no one is allowed to speak to or acknowledge the guilty party are described in the sort of detail that is as horrifying as any jump scare.

I personally prefer the psychological horror path she has tread AFTER this book and I hope she will continue to travel down THAT path. He loaded the side of beef onto Bill using a harness and clips of his own design, then set off along the path which followed the sea. What exactly happened to Eve and to the residents of Atnaharra is a story that only the rest of the novel can tell, but trust when I tell you its secrets are nothing like what you think. The reclusive, crumbling castle, Uncle’s cruel punishments, the sense of gloom and darkness that hangs over the characters’ lives—all of it adds to the creepy feeling that things just aren’t right in Altnaharra. In 2022, following the success of Ward's novels The Last House on Needless Street and Sundial, it was republished in the United States.Por otro lado, la narración no es lineal, hay continuos saltos en el tiempo, por lo que hay que estar muy atentos. Más oscura si cabe que en su anterior novela que también leímos el año pasado en conjunta y nos cautivó, La casa al final de Needless Street. This was a long slog for me, and I am honestly stunned it is less than 300 pages, because I would have guessed it was closer to 500. The story alternates between the past and present, beginning with an event that occurred in January of 1921.

Los acantilados, el mar inmisericorde, el clima, la oscuridad y sobre todo lo demás, el aislamiento en el que viven. Multiple narrative voices fill in the details of what happened, which initially appears to be a familiar, albeit exceptionally well-told, description of an incestuous cult devolving to its horrific end.The family isolated there believes all of the outside world will soon be gone, and only those familiar with the Adder shall survive and therefore rule. That, above all things, was the reason I recommend this story to my horror-reading friends: It's good not to know. The younger ones attend school in the nearby village—Uncle insists on it so their family appears normal to outsiders—but it’s a series of encounters with these townspeople that sends things spiraling out of control. we know the Dark Sorceress Catriona has rattled her bone-bag of words and will be casting irresistible spells soon. She studied English at the University of Oxford, and later, completed a Creative Writing Masters at the University of East Anglia.

And it is slowly and carefully done – the whole book and setting are so atmospheric, and the narrative is so strange. If you want fright and suspense then Catriona Ward will become your new favorite horror author, too! Yet, she also takes time to show us an Eve wrestling with the things she’s been told to believe in, as she meets a variety of locals, including a young girl named Rose who works for a traveling circus and Chief Inspector Christopher Black, a man of science who seems determined to convince Eve that the things she’s been taught are not only wrong but dangerous. From there, the story flips back and forth between 1917 and 1921 to reveal how this gory sacrifice came about, honing in on the conflicting accounts of Dinah and Evelyn. The element of fantasy initially seemed a bit out of place but as this was described in more detail it was integral to the cult leaders eccentricity .Little Eve lives with Uncle and her 'family' on the grey Isle of Altnaharra, off the Coast of Scotland.
