You've never had to call the police before. But now they're in your home, and who knows what they'll find there.

Great cover and simple yet alluring title which with my love of books dealing with houses and neighbours was a given to intrigue me While I would love to gorge myself on PT, they tend to work better for me if I space them out of bit. Thankfully, I passed on this one when it was first released, taking a slight break from the genre, so I didn’t burn myself out on it. As you can tell from my attitude concerning the first chapter, I definitely needed that space. I couldn't leave the book for a minute until I'd discovered how it would all end ... A brilliant book.' So, at the end of the day, it all boils down to how engaged or entertained I was and I have to say, I thought this was a pretty solid thriller and I enjoyed reading it. This book covers a lot of topics including single parent families, Alzheimer’s and domestic violence but it does it in a way that adds to the story and doesn’t focus on it. The characters are really well written and even though not all likable they are believable. While Ash is away on a work trip, he finds he can’t get a hold of Ellie and starts to worry. He comes home and can’t find her or their dog, Poppy. Little does he know that there is more to their house than he knows and definitely more to his neighbors than he could ever imagine. the most terrifying, unforgettable novel you’ll read all year.’ This the cover and blurb oversold this book by double, not only was this book not terrifying, I found myself wanting to forget I’d even wasted the time reading it. ‘And what is hiding in the basement?’ SPOILER: It’s nothing.. When I first started reading this book, my brain could not resist the temptation of playing Blur’s 'House in the Country' over and over because of how idyllic Ellie and Ash’s life seem. However, like a needle being abruptly pulled off a record, this pretty much stops when Ellie discovers the history of their lovely house. Embroiled in murder and abduction, suddenly this very nice house in the country feels isolated, remote and far, far away from any help.

Tony Parsons hooked me from the first few chapters, and I found it really hard to put down, I'd highly recommend it to any thriller lovers.'Ellie Summers and her boyfriend Ash Brady move into their dream home. It’s in the boonies and needs a lot of work, but it has a beautiful garden. In between working on the home and adopting a dog she accidentally hit with her car, Ellie befriends her neighbor, Benjamin, who lives next door with his sister, Virginia. So many lies, betrayals and cover ups in this novel. How well do you know the people closest to you? Lana and Roman Wade are a young professional couples who have escaped unsafe and hectic London for a slower paced life in the idyllic Oxfordshire countryside. They move to an affluent area called "The Gardens" where the neighbours are friendly and tight-knit unlike in London. Whilst Roman relishes the move, Lana isn't so keen. There's something off about her neighbours and they seem to have secrets to hide... The writing in this story is truly atmospheric and I felt like I was experiencing it at the same time as Ellie. Although there were elements of the plot that I predicted, there were still plenty of engrossing, toe-curling surprises. Whilst I don’t think this is as dark as perhaps some of Beevis’s other novels, there were some scenes that were pretty horrific. I think this added to the intensity of the story, making it perfect for these dark, winter nights. Having read The Birthing House and, I admit to having being intrigued by it, if confused by the finale, I thought I would give his third novel a go, despite being 'harangued' by fellow readers not to......

This is a question for my women friends: When you are stressed, do you start cleaning? If ever fueled with anxiety, do you need to clean something, even if your house is already spotless?I really did like the first three quarters of the book, though. In a year of mostly disappointing thrillers, this is one of the best of the bunch. It's a shame that it got a bit too convoluted towards the end, but I'll still look forward to her next thriller. It all started with a “what were you thinking?” moment! Then rapidly morphs into a parent’s worst nightmare. The one bit of criticism I have to offer is the use of foul language. The swearing and f*bombs were used liberally throughout the story. Although, I appreciate that swearing is used to convey intensity of emotion, I don't appreciate the use of so much of it in regular vocabulary and conversation. I am aware l sound like I am gushing and people do comment sometimes, but an avid reader will know when they enjoyed a good book they just have to get out their foghorn and shout it out the world.
