Description

Although Koreans use the word, “ajumma” frequently, we tend to use it when referring to them with others and not directly to their face. While these women can sometimes be dangerous, if you approach one with caution, you will find that under their gruff exteriors, they are usually kind and willing to feed you ridiculous amounts of food. Roughly equivalent to madam or ma’am, ajumma is, according to the National Institution of Korean Language, an informal way of saying “ajumeoni,” which has the same meaning with a more respectful implication. The heat of chilli is combined with soy sauce and garlic to bring out the savoury notes of the Korean red pepper for a more complex heat.

Although it is sometimes translated " aunt", it does not actually refer to a close family relationship. The stereotypical ajosshi wears a grey or black suit with a tie – the suit is often made of a shiny polyester-like fabric and the tie may have sparkly silver bits in it. In the 1970s through to the 80s, as electricity became more accessible, the permed style evolved into the famed ‘wind hair’ style (바람머리), wavy hair that appeared to be ever-blowing in the wind, and saw the incorporation of hair products such as mousse, gel, and holding spray.

Umchinah (엄친아) – another brilliant Korean portmanteau, umchinah is a shortened form of the Korean expression for my “mother’s friend’s son” and refers to that elusive competitor whom you always hear about but never meet, who succeeds at everything and to whom you are constantly, and always unfavourably compared to. I'm a world traveler, entrepreneur, photographer, but really, I'm obsessed with food, K-dramas, and finding the perfect cafe. That’s why they pile onto the subway on weekend mornings for this short getaway trip while their family members are still in bed. Looking forward to visiting this year and putting my very limited Korean to the test now that the quarantine requirement is gone.

Ingredients: Red chilli pepper (39%) (sugar, hot pepper seasoning (red chilli pepper powder, water, salt, garlic, onion, wheat flour, water, red chilli pepper powder, salt), sugar 26%, water, soy sauce 6. On the other hand, the Korean word samonim was originally interpreted as "wife of mentor" or "wife of superior" [4] and describes a married woman of high social status. They usually camouflage themselves in matching vinyl jackets and ill-fitting shoes for these habitats. These women are often mocked or considered a threat because of their tendency to be aggressive or self-centered, mostly in public places. The health-conscious ajumma do very unique moves to maintain a toned body on the walking trails in the parks along the Han River. This new wave of soft feminism allowed young ajummas (excuse me, missies) to successfully abandon the rural styles that used to define them and to adopt new, urban, and sophisticated lifestyles. For semi-formal occasions, the go-to outfit for ajumma is a simple black jacket with glittering gemstones and a vivid, brightly-colored shirt underneath.

But as more women break into the professional realm, so has the ajumma perm, and it is worn by corporate workers, lawmakers, and First Ladies alike. Ingredients: Red Chilli Pepper Paste 39% (Sugar, Hot Pepper Seasoning (Red Chilli Pepper Powder, Water, Salt, Garlic, Onion), Wheat Flour, Water, Red Chilli Pepper Powder, Salt), Sugar 26%, Water, Soy Sauce 6.A post inspired by the many similar-looking elderly women I pass on the streets daily or have elbow-jabbing me in my ribs to get on the subway here in Korea. Halmoni (할모니) – the Korean word for grandmother, and also a polite term of reference given to any woman old enough to be your grandmother. radish, red repper, sugar, salted anchovy (anchovy 75%, salt 25%), fish , salted shrimp (shrimp 80%, salt 20%), crustaceans , garlic, leek, ginger, flavour enhancer: E621.
