Description

The story (as you might have guessed from the title) follows Gruoch, daughter of the rightful King of Scotland, in a tale of survival that spans from her childhood to adulthood. In Act 1, Lady Macbeth appears as a powerful, confident character. Although she is at first in control of the situation, by the middle of the play Macbeth begins to make decisions without her knowledge. I am very conflicted about how to rate this book, since it was very entertaining, but also very frustrating and somewhat disappointing. Lady Macduff is Macduff’s wife and Ross’s cousin. She is angry with Macduff when he leaves for England to raise an army because he has put his country before his family. When she is warned that she is in danger, she refuses to run away because she knows that she has done nothing wrong. Macbeth’s henchmen kill her child, and then kill her. She tells Ross that unlike her husband, a woman would never leave her children, but would fight to protect them:

What is our brain trying to tell us, as we sleep?” The truth of it was that I had been born to be a queen. My blood sang of it, with or without a prophecy."

A look into the origins of Lady Macbeth. A fictional historic romance. Gruoch is a strong female character that just wants to fulfill a prophecy about her. Nothing will stop her. Happy to share that the book had a lasting impression and after days of reading, I am still thinking about Gruoch's zeal for survival. Considering the timelines around which the book is based around, the behaviour of mothers training their daughters to be Damsels, men ruling the world, was captured in a picture-perfect mode. And next, apparently Gruoch mother wasn't a Christian until her father-in-law was killed in 1005. Gruoch constantly calls Christianity 'the new religion.' Anna is terrified into muteness, and Boris is buried without suspicion. Katherine takes over the estate, and she and Sebastian continue their affair openly. One night, while they are asleep in Katherine's marital bed, she awakes to realise that Alexander has returned home. After he reveals that he is aware of the infidelity, Katherine summons Sebastian and they start to have sex in front of him. A fight ensues, during which Katherine kills Alexander. The couple bury Alexander's body in the woods and kill his horse. They are not directly accused of the murder, and Sebastian begins to dress and behave as the lord of the manor himself. Act 1 Scene 7: Think about Macbeth’s own personality and Lady Macbeth’s reaction to his inner conflict.Throughout Act 1, Macbeth is conflicted about whether or not he should kill King Duncan. In Act 1 Scene 7, for example, Macbeth talks about how Duncan is ‘both his kinsmen and his subject’ as well as his ‘host’, all reasons not to kill the king. However, he makes the choice to go ahead and commit ‘the horrid deed’ in Act 2. This choice is one of the central turning points for this character and it is vital for anyone writing about Macbeth, or playing Macbeth on stage, to look at his motivations at this point and ask: And if Boedhe did decide to become a Christian, Gruoch would’ve been taught about Christianity, she would not be learning about it from local children. She’s still the granddaughter of a king and would be raised as such, especially since at this time Scots could stake a claim to the throne through their maternal line. Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free, electronic copy of this novel received in exchange for an honest review. In this book Isabelle Schuler looks into Lady Macbethad's origins. Her noble birth, her pagan roots, her love of country and family and her unceasing ambition to become the great queen she knew she could be. Obviously this is historical fiction so a lot is imagined but at least Ms Schuler gives us a more rounded character than the crazed psychopath that Will Shakespeare left us with.
