It’s a very upbeat discussion of the film as they watch it together, and is much more on the lighter side of things compared to the previous commentary. DTS-HD MA track from the Universal release (which is in no way a bad thing) and added their obligatory 2. Characters, dynamics, and outcomes have been completely altered and gone altogether is the consumerism angle of the original. The Extended (‘Cannes’) cut, which some prefer due to its extended scenes, but for me this is off set by the slightly slower pacing.

Super 8 Mall Footage - By zombie extra Ralph Langer with option of archive commentary by Robert Langer and new commentary by Ralph Langer. Romero's film Dawn of the Dead (1978), starring Scott Reiniger, Ken Foree, David Emge, Gaylen Ross, and Tom Savini. When they manage to break in though and find a secluded loft space the zombies can’t get to, the four of them decide to stay in the mall for a while. Snyder does a great job of making the movie a veritable blood bath, with blood, guts, gore and entrails hanging from every corner. The stories of the bikers are particularly enjoyable and don’t crop up elsewhere as a lot of the zombie anecdotes do.

The release date got pushed back a couple of times after an early tease, so the film’s many fans have been chomping at the bit for this for a long time. I did not detect any problems on the audio tracks, but I have seen reviews that say that the dialogue is muddled in parts of the Cannes cut. If there’s a singular line that defines the Dawn of the Dead remake, that’s it, both in terms of the post-9/11 zeitgeist and the change in tone. The set is also crammed full of goodies: the iconic Goblin score, the novelization and a book of essays and photos you won't want to put down. It’s less informative than the others but it’s a lot of fun to listen to them get together and laugh and joke about the shoot and film.

And the opening sequence with Sarah Polley attacked in her home, leading to a vehicluar escape with videogame-like angles to shoot it, is an ALL-TIME great prologue no matter what genre.

Dynamics: I’m not sure as there were no notes in the press release or on the packaging, but I think the audio here is the same that was available on the Blu-ray release. Easily the worst of the restorations presented, though worst is relative here; this cut too has never looked so good. George A Romero's Dawn of the Dead remains one of the greatest horror films ever made, often imitated but never equalled, and is now presented in a brand-new restoration. The documentary might be a little technical for some in its first half, but it moves quickly enough to prevent it from feeling dry.

It’s a triple disc set, beginning with the unrated cut in 4K alongside a commentary featuring director Zack Snyder and his producer Eric Newman. Finally, the ‘Zombies and Bikers’ extended featurette offers an entertaining look at what it was like to be one of the film’s many extras. As previously mentioned, the notion of fast-moving zombies has been more or less erased from the zombie lexicon, but there are certain visuals and sequences that hold up.Although confined to the center of the screen with outstanding dialogue reproduction from start to finish, dynamic range is surprisingly extensive with noteworthy clarity in the higher frequencies. His work here maybe isn’t as refined as his later work, but this is purely due to the sheer volume of effects in the film. The overall UHD package is highly recommended for hardened fans and makes for an awesome addition to the 4K library. Some of us missed out on Second Sight's big limited edition set, but this standalone 4K release of their gorgeous DAWN OF THE DEAD restoration is every bit as fantastic. Now brought up in conversations as one of the better horror remakes alongside John Carpenter’s The Thing, David Cronenberg’s The Fly, and Philip Kaufman’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Zack Snyder’s (and to a large degree, James Gunn’s) Dawn of the Dead is a completely different beast than Romero’s, and depending upon who you ask, its modern-day equal.
