About this deal

The real magic of this novel is that the mystery slowly reveals itself piece by piece, each clue gradually forming a terrifying picture. The main character is a paranormal investigator and a couple of chapters deal with his previous cases, - they produced the effect of embedded stories and gave more depth to the main plot.

In this first story, paranormal investigator (and skeptic) David is invited to a crumbling, lonely mansion in the English countryside to stay and investigate ghostly goings on - and to see if he can prove that these are really happening. Widely imitated and hugely influential, he wrote 23 novels which have collectively sold over 54 million copies worldwide and been translated into 34 languages. They dominated the others, the dark-furred ones, who foraged for food and brought it back to the lair. The house and set-up were reminiscent of a Carnacki story, but there was no pay-off, no thrills, no chills. There he meets the Mariell family - two brothers, Robert and Simon, their younger sister, Christina, and their aunt, Nanny Tess. Some books I can come back to later and pick up right where I left off, but I had trouble with this one, especially with time jumping. Herbert does a good job providing backstory with a series of flashbacks and builds Ash's character up well.

The Wolseley’s bodywork and wheels appeared to be in immaculate condition and its engine was running smoothly with only a mild escape of exhaust fumes from the rear. Not only that, this novel also has some of the best pacing that I’ve seen in a long time too 🙂 Not only is this the kind of suspenseful “slow burn” story that gradually gets scarier and scarier before finally exploding into a furiously fast-paced welter of horror movie-style shocks during the dramatic conclusion, but Herbert also does a few clever things with the story’s structure too. Its two heads weaved to and fro and a stickiness drooled from its mouth as it remembered the taste of human flesh .If you fail to comply with this obligation, we may have a right of action against you for compensation. Again, I’m worried about spoiling too much, but these characters are handled in the kind of wonderfully subtle and “realistic” way that just makes them seem like normal – but intriguingly quirky – people at first, before they gradually become more and more disturbing as the story progresses. At the beginning - I love me a Ghostbuster tries to debunk the haunted house story with lots of cliches.

Mariell drowned herself was because she discovered drunken Simon and Robert in their parent's bed having incestuous sex with Christina. So one will understand why I am saying that the story was confusing at times, which detracted from my enjoyment of it. of the way through - I know exactly where this is going - I love this particular twist when done well. As each dark secret is unveiled and terrible, malign forces are unleashed, he will fear for his very sanity. Thankfully, this novel has less lurid sex scenes than his normal (although of course there has to be a least a couple) and while quite short, it packs a good punch.

So, he wanders across the street to the local pub and has a drink before phoning his boss, Kate, to ask about the case.

It's a ghost story with atmospheric depictions of an old house, an overgrown garden and a scary forest. With suggestive bursts of ghostly appearances that become more and more frequent as the tale progresses, the old cliché of "am I going insane" is thrown into the equation, until finally the horrifying truth is revealed in an almost explosive manner. From the very beginning the reader soon becomes accustomed to Ash's bad habits, cynical view on life and overall downbeat traits, of which followers of Herbert's work will recognise as a somewhat recurring theme within his novels. I read The Secret of Crickley Hall this year and I really enjoyed it, so I began this series and I wasn’t disappointed. Even without the ghostly elements, this would still be a very chilling and well-crafted tale about the more horrifying parts of the human psyche.Born in London in the forties, James Herbert was art director of an advertising agency before turning to writing fiction in 1975. In terms of the characters, they are absolutely stellar 🙂 David Ash is a troubled, complex character with a lot of well-written flaws that help to emphasise the terrified vulnerability beneath his gruff and cynical exterior. I hadn't read a James Herbert book for over 20 years, so it was good to immerse myself once again back in his world of horror and the supernatural.
