I’m not sure all science fiction fans will be thrilled because this one is more heavy on romance and lighter on the sci-fi side but I found it to be incredibly engaging being a lover of both genres. Winnie-the-Pooh is one, The Velveteen Rabbit and Charlotte’s Web others, and Dave Eggers’ The Eyes and the Impossible takes its place among them. Nick engages with a group of oddballs who have some off-the-grid notions about space-time, and what rules should apply when contact is achieved. In his latest book, he shows Christians that God’s power enables us to live a life of joyful obedience. Yet, Colin O’Brady was determined to do just that, even if, ten years earlier, there was doubt that he’d ever walk again normally.

One assumes he is attempting to head off at the pass future interview questions from child and adult alike, wondering what it all means. When they do decide to meet they discover they belong in alternate realities – how many versions of the world there are, they have no idea. Highlighting exceptional technical innovations, remarkable drivers’ achievements and exciting race finishes, this volume illuminates immortal names such as Juan Manuel Fangio, Jim Clark, Bruce McLaren, Enzo Ferrari, Colin Chapman, Bernie Ecclestone, Jackie Stewart, Niki Lauda, Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna, Jean Todt, Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton, who recently made history tying Schumacher’s championship titles and breaking his record of total career race victories. Some only associate such books with death (as with the aforementioned Charlotte, The Underneath, etc. The Eyes and the Impossible is Exhibit A in the argument for children’s books being great literature. Self-esteem, work success, coercive relationships and friendships are all put under the microscope in this way, with characters sometimes given a second chance to get it right. Firstly, I did not get the Kindle edition, so I cannot say whether the lazy typesetting in the first edition ruined the last page for other people as it did for me (took me 5 minutes to work it out), and I am therefore discounting it and giving the author the five stars she deserves because I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and could not put it down. In spite of all my nitpicking, however, I could not separate myself from this novel and I highly enjoyed it.

I love reading children's books, talking to them about books, engaging them in reading for pleasure and recommending books to them. The story lurches from one complication to another as Nick and Bee set out to overcome their cross-dimensional problem to find happiness. The world ahead is visible only above a rim at eye level; the world behind is seen only through two mirrors little bigger than cigarette boxes. Bee seems nice, successful, and smart, but Nick is in such a slump of feeling sorry for himself and inertia, that about the only reason I cared about him was because he loves his dog, Rosie, and because he is pretty funny. This is galling for the original Nick, who is a literary hack, ghost writing for authors with limited talent. It reminds me of Richard Linklater’s School of Rock (2003) in that it is a great work that can be enjoyed – the full spectrum of enjoyment! Harris places Johannes in classical landscape paintings, running free, demonstrating an appeal that is wilder and more profound than mere canine charm. Nick's depressed, in a very going nowhere but down marriage, wallowing in his failure to get off the couch and make something of himself.

Lotz perfectly balances the heavy with the light, and creates a feeling of genuine connection between her protagonists.

Along the way, it fought Establishment quangos, the courts, Parliament, the Speaker and the government – hammering the Conservatives so hard it forced the resignation of their Prime Minister – to win nearly twice as many seats as its nearest rival. I’d recommend it to anyone that is looking for a new novel with strong relationships and romance elements, but lighter on character or plot development. I now understand why desperate people find religion, or end up believing in aliens or conspiracy theories. Her relationship with Miranda is strained because of Miranda’s illness, but there are some genuinely touching moments between the two.
