A character in an Armatrading song you sense lives most of their life in their own head, shy ears pressed to walls, perpetually dreaming whilst life’s clock runs down unnoticed. Joan Armatrading’s revered songbook will be celebrated with Thursday’s (3) publication by Faber of The Weakness In Me: Selected Lyrics. For Joan Armatrading, that sense of sensuality and magic has always been seminal in her canon of work. It contains an introduction by Armatrading and annotations to a number of songs as well as handwritten lyrics and scores, giving a rare, personal glimpse into the creative process of a true pioneer.Selected and arranged by the author, The Weakness In Me presents the lyrics of Joan Armatrading for the first time in one unique volume. Some have claimed Armatrading’s songs are about the mystery of love or at least the inherent ache of it but actually, there’s a sense of unrequitedness that runs through her work that is hard to ignore. It also contains an introduction by Armatrading alongside annotations to a number of songs, giving a rare, personal glimpse into the creative process of a true pioneer. That last song doesn’t sound like anything else on Consequences — it’s more downbeat and sparsely arranged — but it’s an interesting and effective way to end the record. The new volume also has a foreword by distinguished record producer Glyn Johns, who produced Armatrading’s self-titled breakthrough album (featuring one of her signature hit singles, “Love and Affection”) in 1976.

The London event has sold out, but limited tickets for all others, including entry and a copy of the book, are available here. The book is out now, and to celebrate this book we take a look back at her 50-year-career in an interview with Armatrading herself. Now collected in a book by Faber, these published lyrics, stripped of their chords and warmth seem surprisingly bleaker without a soundtrack. Strong rhythmic acoustic guitar playing and melodic electric solos help to make her the consummate musician. Since the release of her debut album Whatever’s For Us in 1972, Joan Armatrading has, across a fifty-year career, traversed styles and genres to create a monumental body of work.In book form of course such criticism is easy and therein lies the problem with the skeleton of lyrics without their accompaniment. This Charming Life, a more rock-oriented album, arrived three years later and the jazz-infused Starlight came three years after that. In the UK — where she has spent most of her life — she has placed hit singles on the charts from time to time and played the Royal Albert Hall. Selected and arranged by the author, and featuring a foreword by revered record producer Glyn Johns, The Weakness In Me presents the lyrics of Armatrading for the first time in one unique volume. He has been a professional journalist since 1999 and has very possibly written about women in music more than any male journalist in America.

You know, when I did my degree — which I did over five years [while] I was on tour — I never told anybody.Listening to a lot of these songs with Armatrading’s skilled arrangements attached, the antithesis is true and certain lyrics immediately shift into stranger and more passionate waters.
