About this deal

With everything she loves at stake, Yanne must face a difficult choice; to flee, as she has done so many times before, or to confront her most dangerous enemy.

Anouk/Annie is a confused pre-teen who fights with her mother (typical) and feels misunderstood and unappreciated (typical). As a reader, you certainly need to be prepared to 'suspend disbelief' in relation to the magical elements of the book but personally I found myself totally invested in the story from the outset.

Vianne herself has adopted a policy of trying to fit in, and no longer uses her magic, which has always marked her and her daughters as different, and which she feels has been the cause of their itinerant lifestyle. I read Chocolat quite a while back, but am nonetheless pretty sure I enjoyed ‘The Lollipop Shoes’ more.

At his rather bloody festival, the Aztecs killed all the prisoners that they had taken in war, and these would also be subject to flaying. The story's told through three voices: Anouk's, Vianne's, and Zozie De L'Alba (not her real name, just her current persona). Since I read that book right before this one, I remember very well how circumstances were in Vianne's life, and it seemed to me that in this book the author implies a great deal more happening than was suggested in the final chapters of Chocolat.Chocolat was a hard act to follow but Harris has managed it in style' -- DAILY EXPRESS'A delicious urban fairytale, where killer shoes and Aztec myths battle it out with true love and the seductive power of chocolate' -- DAILY MAIL'A cracking and spellbinding story' -- ***** Reader review'Loved this book so much! This book has Vianne and her (now two) daughters inhabiting Montmartre, and trying to live as "normal" people.
