Description

He was a handsome main with thick short hair and large brown eyes, but his head was slightly small and was stuck well into the air as if the man were afraid of his own shirt collar. I am positive that my enjoyment of Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand is largely due to the fine narration of the audiobook by Peter Altschuler. There was almost a small opening in the crowd at the bar, but the space between the Major and a welcome gin and tonic was occupied by a rather unhappy looking Sadie Khan and her husband, the doctor.

The only thing that knocked a star off this review for me was a slightly hackish plot device at the end, but it's such a minor thing it really only counts for half a star. I found him a little unrounded; he followed his father into the army, and we are told that when he left he spent time teaching in a boys’ private school but was happy to leave it. I recognised the title and remembered reading it, but until I read your review I had no memory of the plot. They're all incredibly enjoyable -- I'm usually someone who likes adventure stories and urges the plot to go faster, but not once did I feel like Simonson was dragging her heels.

For 27 weeks it stayed on the New York Times Bestseller list, are being translated into 16 languages, and the movie rights have been sold. Drawn together by their shared love of literature and the loss of their respective spouses, the Major and Mrs. He saw another waiter slap a male dancer across the face with his white arm towel, as if to challenge him to a duel. Distracted by grief, he happens to be wearing a red, flowery housecoat when he answers a ring at his front door.He shifts seamlessly between the gravelly voice of Pettigrew, the sotto voce of Mrs Ali and the easily distinguishable ensemble cast of family and villagers ( listen to an audio sample). He has an absolutely delightful, droll dry wit, sometimes sarcastic but always dead on and hilarious as he observes and intermingles with the world at large. Set in modern England, it encompasses many facets of British life - clashes and frictions between generations, social classes, religions, and cultures - all portrayed from the POV of an aging, conservative and very proper man who, because of his late love, finds himself compelled to face many issues he preferred to avoid or overlook in the past. With characters that have depth and heart, and a charming, endearing love story, it is easy to care, and thus to become involved, and ultimately, to enjoy. Parent-child relationships and differences in the generations are explored in a humorous, and sometimes poignant, manner.

The narrative, which is enjoyable even when it tootles along with mechanical efficiency, follows a three-act structure and detonates the party scene at the end of Act II. There’s nothing more corrosive to character than money,” the major tells his son in a heated moment. United by their love of Kipling and their lingering bereavement of their departed spouses, Major Pettigrew (who was born in Lahore), and Mrs. DakleM, ova knjiga će ove godine ugledati svetlost dana u Srbiji, ne pre leta a najverovatnije za sajam. And next time I read about two foolish kids whose eyes meet across a crowded dance floor, and they just KNOW that it was meant to be. Helen Simonson nicely captures the patronising views of the villagers, especially as Mr and Mrs Ali were born in the North of England. But this is a romance novel that contains human lessons, tensions and struggles almost too numerous to count. He has allowed part of his property to be used as a boys’ school, not grasping that little boys don’t like to see pet ducks fall out of the sky. He is concerned about one of a pair of special guns that he believes his father intended to be reunited when the first of his two sons died.

He became entangled in her green sari in a way that made Mortimer Teale look quite jealous, and was rescued by Alex Shaw; he dragged them behind the bar, which Lord Dagenham and Ferguson seemed to have commanded as if for a siege. In this case, however, the 350-page journey is not one that will reward the reader with amusement, pleasure, or insight. There’s also the psychology of dealing with the loss by death of a loved one and the subsequent tensions of dealing with inheritances issues. There are only six, and they have been mined for television and radio and collected between covers and read and reread.
