Description

Hold a normal remote control about 3 cm from the tip of the Sonic while the tip is glowing steadily, and briefly press and release the normal remote control button for the function you want to program on to that gesture. I know some people are incredibly irate about it, and I'm sure the screwdriver will show up again someday. Before the Sonic can be used by humans to control Earth devices in the home, it will need to be programmed with the infrared (IR) remote control button codes of those devices. When it made its first appearance, the Sonic resembled a pen light: a simple, smooth metal cylinder with no embellishments or extensions like in later versions. This Sonic Screwdriver is a motion sensitive device, designed to recognise 13 distinct and accurately performed gestures.

Although the Sonic Screwdriver does feel nice and heavy in the hand, it is in fact lighter than the screen prop (205 g compared to around 268 g for the original prop). The Sonic may be extended either by gripping the knurled grey parts of the upper cage and pulling it away from the handle, or by carefully flicking it. Remember that you have three memory banks, so in total you have 12 flick gestures to record codes on to. If Doctor Who fans were asked to name icons from the series, most would probably name three things: The TARDIS, Daleks, and the Sonic Screwdriver. Of course we didn’t have the chance to go through the full set-up procedure for the new Sonic Screwdriver, but we were impressed with the quality feel of it.The real prop also has a protruding button soldered on to a square cut out in the grip material, which the actors use to make the tip glow when the script requires it. Try varying the duration of the original remote control button press from very brief up to about half a second. Although the colour is a close match to the prop, during its time on screen, the prop’s paint degraded and by the end of filming, had a very patchy appearance. Following the huge popularity of the Eleventh Doctor range, The Wand Company have created an authentic Tenth Doctor Sonic Screwdriver Remote Control. If the Sonic misinterprets a gesture, hold the device steady for a few seconds then repeat the gesture taking care to use short, accurate, positive movements.

Please note that the Twelfth Doctor’s Sonic Screwdriver does require quite precise hand movements to perform the gestures, so we do not recommend it as a remote control for the elderly or infirm. The Sonic Screwdriver URC’s slider pad button incorporates a light pipe so that it can indicate charge status. At one point, the Twelfth Doctor donned Sonic Sunglasses instead of carrying the Screwdriver, stating that they don't "spoil the line of your jacket.Press the grip mounted button for instant action in FX Mode, and access 12 different sonic buzzes, beeps and scanning sounds from the universe of Doctor Who. When displaying the sonic on its stand, make sure that the stand is stable on a firm surface and out of reach of small children. Adding to the weight is the internal lithium polymer battery, which is charged via Micro-USB, hidden under the black cap on the bottom. There’s a button on the slider that activates the remote, which otherwise uses gestures to control your devices.
