And, when time came to play, actually getting up to an engrossing pace proved quite difficult – partly because the Core Book could be a mite clearer about a couple of key rules (more on that shortly), but mostly because I spent so much game time flipping between pages in the Octarius supplement booklet, looking up the stats for different operatives as they came up. The alternating activations move quickly and fluidly, and the Strategic and Tactical Ploys, as a mini version of 40k’s much more expansive sets of stratagems, offer just enough extra in-game levers to pull, without cluttering up Kill Team’s more energetic, moment-to-moment turn-taking.

Rob has spent most of the last 20 years playing World of Warcraft and writing stories set in made-up worlds. This means that once it’s gone, that’ll likely be it and you won’t get a chance to pick it up again. v=1628929887","options":["Title"],"media":[{"alt":null,"id":20468347109434,"position":1,"preview_image":{"aspect_ratio":0.

Ork aesthetic demands everything be big, chunky, and have lots of sticky-out parts, so the scenery sprues are both some of the largest and heaviest currently available.

The Firefight Phase is when your inanimate plastic animates and moves around the board and shoots (or hacks, chops, slashes, blows up etc. One of my favourite things to do as a hobbyist is to look at people’s heavily converted and individualised Kill Teams, and that is being taken away from players – at least for the time being. In general, once the Kommandos get up in the Guardsmen’s faces, things swing in the Greenskins’ favour – and, when that happens, the gleeful melee mayhem these fellas can wreak will have them melting the heart of even inveterate Emperor-lovers like me. This is essentially the “Hero Phase” or “Command Phase” of Kill Team – here each player generates a command point (In addition to any they start with – having a “leader” in your Kill Team for example starts you with an additional 2 CP) and then can take turns using that CP to play Strategic Ploys. How best to introduce and assess this new – and, honestly, quite bright – star in the Warhammer firmament? I’ve not had the chance to absorb its every delicious option yet, but this persistent campaign system – obviously built from the same materials as Warhammer 40k 9th Edition’s Crusade mode – is pregnant with potential for fantastic emergent storytelling. GW isn’t going to throw open the factory gates and flood us with a whole tide of releases with all the new rules for all the Kill Team factions all at once.

s fast, reactive alternating activations, the constant passing back and forth of one shared book of unit stats gets immersion-breakingly annoying very quickly. I managed to get this built up and painted to a battle ready standard in a day (due to needing this stuff together and painted in time for this review!

I hope that going forward each army gets a kit that is designed around Kill Team, as both of these sets are fantastic in how they give you not only a cool unit for 40k, but an entire kill team of different looking operatives for your games of Kill Team! While you only get 10, this is more than enough for games of Kill Team as all combat is on a model per model basis! Although it’s not included in this set, it’s important we have a proper chat about this Kill Team Compendium. It comes with 23 miniatures that make up two versatile kill teams – the Ork Kommandos and the Veteran Guardsmen – as well as enough terrain to build a whole Ork scrap town.
