Description

In 1952, approximately 65 % of the thorium produced in the U.S. was being used in lantern mantles. It has been estimated that the annual production/sales of mantles in the U.S. was 20 million in 1974, 25 million in 1981 and 50 million in 2000. Sometime around 1990, the Coleman Company replaced the thorium in their mantles with yttrium. The yttrium mantle produces about 20% less light, but it lasts longer. According to NUREG-1717, about half of the 50 million mantles sold in the U.S. in 2000 (or thereabouts), contained thorium. Estimates of the Radiation Exposures In June 2001, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission published a study about the Systematic Radiological Assessment of Exemptions for Source and Byproduct Materials, [9] stating that radioactive gas mantles are explicitly legal in the US. [10] See also [ edit ] NUREG-1717 section 3.14.: "any person is exempt from the requirements for a license to the extent that the person receives, possesses, uses, or transfers any quantity of thorium contained in incandescent gas mantles. This exemption was established on March 20, 1947 (12 FR 1855), and has remained essentially unchanged since that time."

The gasket in filler cap may deteriorate with age. It might be well to install a new No. 2206361 Gasket and Disc Assembly occasionally. h2>

The inhalation doses were based on the assumption that all of the Rn-220 in the mantle was released and that 30 % of the radium was volatilized when the mantles were ignited. The flitting beams of multiple headlamps can create a curiously strobe-like effect and often result in disgruntled companions when blinded by their harsh glare. Power-wise, headlamps also rarely offer enough “oomph” to illuminate large spaces when on flood or wide setting.

Anyone who spends a lot of nights out in the wild or car camping could benefit from adding a lantern mantle to their kit. While more modern equivalents such as headlamps or battery-powered flashlights do essentially the same job, those plumping for lantern mantles do so on account of a number of highly desirable benefits, which you’ll find in the review below.
