Description

In the embroidery section of the book, there’s this fabulous sampler approach to learning how to stitch the different elements that you might see in a bird’s environment. I was really pleased with these little bluetits and I want to work on lots more, as well as all the other birdy visitors to my garden. Her unique embroideries draw on years of personal study and practice in design, drawing, painting, print-making, clay and object making but it is the flexibility and technical variety inherent in textiles, in particular hand embroidery, that always fascinated her.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. The embroidery has been stitched directly onto a background of 14 count ivory aida fabric and is displayed within a 4 inch ring frame. Note the positioning of the hanging loop, it’s over toward the birds neck, NOT centrally on the back. The line is very fine which makes it easier to stitch more neatly and to remove it you use heat, so you iron your fabric and it’s gone. This appliqué process is used in all kinds of needlework, but it works exceptionally well in these layered pieces because it helps evoke the depth and dimension of the environment.

It was a turning point; the perfect match for her love of colour and pattern, combined with storytelling. Samples of finished work are scattered throughout, rather than just at the end which I really liked. Cut 2 of the wing shapes from patterned fabric and then secure them in position using a running stitch.

I learned to embroider when I was a kid, when everyone was really into cross stitch (remember the '80s? Finally, there's a section on framing up your work, examples of finished work and a stich guide complete with diagrams.

just scroll down for photos to show what I mean) Secure the hanging thread, just above the knot with a few stitches and then continue around with a running stitch to join the pieces together. The directions were easy to follow, even with this only being the second time I have done embroidery. Emma has been inspired and transforms and reawakens the style of pulp art by bringing her own take on it. As a beginning embroiderer, I am so impressed with her beautiful bird "needle paintings", and she gives detailed instructions for stitching these birds and creating their beautiful backgrounds, providing patterns and so forth. Keep in mind that anyone can view public collections - they may also appear in recommendations and other places. There are chapters on how to sketch out your composition and design your project, with ideas for utilising photos as an aid. The book also includes finishing techniques such as mounting and framing and a stitch glossary that includes Judy's own adapted stitches.I really do love this book, which I received for review, and can't wait to try some of the techniques.

Again, note the fact that the hanging loop is off centre, you really do need to do this if you want the bird to hang straight. I think blackbirds must be my favourite garden birds, but I love them all and try to encourage as many as possible into the garden. I`m so excited to see what this year brings… I`m going to begin with lots more drawings and stitching of birds. This fantastic book showcases the prestigious Embroiderers’ Guild’s huge collection of embroidered birds through the ages. There are many intricate, inspiring details to this design, layers of harmonious life, and the result is gentle, calming, and joyful. The book covers the author’s process really well, and makes that process accessible to anyone who is interested in building multi-layered textile projects. Excellent quality all around, highly recommended, not just for stitchers but also for bird lovers, artists, and anyone who loves beautiful art. I particularly found this informative as I am a beginner with drawing and has given me confidence to try.
