Description

With great wisdom and insight Lindbergh describes the shifting patterns of relationships and marriage, presenting a vision of life as it is lived in an enduring and evolving partnership. I felt dumb for not liking it because I know how many people love it, but maybe I'd enjoy it more at a different time in my life.

A series of essays, really about how to be a woman, how to make space for self, for quiet and calm in a busy world. Gift from the Sea is a book that enacts its own prescription … which is my attempt to sum up how this book about the difficulty, but also the inestimable value, of quiet meditation prompts its readers (or this reader, anyway) to just such inward contemplation.

Whether your wedding is an impromptu affair or has been months, or even years, in the making, I want to help you fashion a ceremony that reflects your history, philosophy, creativity, personality, and style – as individuals and as a couple. The early years of marriage – the “double-sunrise” phase – are, by contrast, “pure, simple, and unencumbered,” with a “self-enclosed perfection [that] wears the freshness of a summer morning. Sarah Ritchie crafted a unique and exceptional ceremony, eschewing rote procedural tropes for a heartfelt and personalized experience that drew both laughter and tears from our friends and family.

The spotlight made Anne Lindbergh uneasy even before the 1932 kidnapping and murder of her first-born son. And so gradually, these chapters, fed by conversations, arguments and revelations from men and women of all groups, became more than my individual story, until I decided in the end to give them back to the people who had shared and stimulated many of these thoughts. Lindbergh provides a glimpse of this type of relationship by describing a day she spent by the beach with her sister, where they enjoyed time together and apart and lived by the same subtle rhythm. It was especially helpful to hear this because, one, she did have a creative vocation before her empty nest and yet, she still experienced the shift and two, she acknowledges that there is not even a hint of this among other women and books. She talks about how it reminded her of a house full of children, toys and bikes everywhere, with friends spilling out, noisy, messy and chaotic.A great comfort and reassuring book that sums up so beautifully what it is like to be a family woman wanting to balance family life but also have the time to be her to not just a housewife not just a mother but to also have the comfort of time for herself interests and also be able to love without the need to cling on , in other words to be able to give love, but allow those she loves to be able to have their own lives too , to have their own space time and interests and yet she will still love them even through distance you can still love . Gift from the Sea is one of those books that I have heard about my entire life and meant to read for.

Her answer was to concentrate on “the here, the now, the individual,” “the drops that make up the stream,” “not as a retreat from greater responsibility, but as a first real step toward a deeper understanding and solution of them” (pp 127-128). This is what one thirsts for, I realize, after the smallness of the day, of work, of details, of intimacy - even of communication, one thirsts for the magnitude and universality of a night full of stars, pouring into one like a fresh tide. She cast an unsentimental eye on the trappings of modernity that threaten to overwhelm us, and by recording her thoughts during a brief escape from everyday demands, she helps readers find a space for contemplation and creativity within their own lives. But I think one can take the Christian references and common sense passages at one’s own interpretation.

I want, in fact–to borrow from the language of the saints–to live “in grace” as much of the time as possible. Out of the welter of life, a few people are selected for us by the accident of temporary confinement in the same circle. However, the children eventually grow up and leave home, leaving the couple to confront the question of what to do next.reading this book, in places, made me long to go back to Atlantic Beach, made me go back and read my diaries of New York.
