The LED neckband has an off position, solid glow, slow flash and fast flash settings so you can ring the changes as you exercise and keep yourself safe when you're out and about. There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase, a SQL command or malformed data. This can cause more connectivity problems on the budget end of headphones, but it can also offer convenient audio without any pesky cables getting in the way.

We rate sound quality using a professional panel of five expert listeners with a range of ages and musical tastes. For wired pairs, the focus is on the strength of the joint between the headphones and the cable, as this is where many cheaper wired headphones fail. He is also the chief tester for fitness trackers and running watches, treadmills and exercise bikes, and workout headphones. As a relatively cheap pair of true wireless earbuds, the SoundBuds connect to your source device through the right earbud, with the left and right earbuds then connecting to each other. It's particularly important to choose headphones with a good acoustic seal for travelling, to avoid annoying your fellow passengers.

Having worked in this industry many years and having been involved in my own line of production before, I got the fear from the generic packaging and messaging on the box that this would be yet more of the same as I have experienced in the past, especially when I delved inside to find a solid black box to charge and transport the headphones. Although the packaging and build materials may be wanting for a little more razzle-dazzle, if I were to only experience these buds for their performance in sound, battery life, comfort and fit, I would be very much happy paying double. It’s worth noting that Funcl’s offering is also cheaper than the Groov-E SoundBuds reviewed here, with generally more pleasing audio too. If untethered audio is your priority, it may be worth it, but keep in mind you’re not getting the audio quality you would for wired earphones for the same cost.

That said, the earbuds and case are light and compact, and for transporting in a bag or pocket everyday they’re perfectly sufficient. The sound was a little distorted at high volumes and the bass was a bit fuzzy too, but there was decent separation between instruments and vocals, and the bass was pretty powerful. They can struggle especially with higher notes, though: listening to something like the heart-wrenching solo in Burn (Hamilton Soundtrack) will grate on the ears, with a scratchy sound that can’t quite keep the higher notes together – there’s a lot of sibilance wringing out the s’s for all they’re worth. The SoundBuds are more comfortable with mid-range frequencies that don’t push their drivers particularly hard.

You arguably are not going to hear the subtleties of particular instruments, but hey, you get what you pay for. A five star rating is 2020 minutes or more, and similarly 1540 minutes for four stars, 1060 minutes for three stars and 580 minutes for two stars. Even when testing at my desk here at the office I was able to wander off for a coffee in the kitchen downstairs without losing any connection, and in the gym I was able to perform sprints with my phone sitting at the starting line without worrying about any patchy tracks when I needed motivation the most. They’re water and sweat-resistant and their astonishing 28-hour battery life claim could see you through the longest endurance sports. The Groov-E SportBuds aren’t faultless, but given that you're getting truly wireless sports headphones that sound pretty good and fit well for under 40 quid, all the faults I've come across can be forgiven.

When you are on the move you've got 8 hours of Bluetooth wireless operation with just a 2-3 hours recharge time via the Micro USB charging cable which comes with the earphones. I found that the in-ear bud would squirm out of my ear a little, especially when running, but the hook kept the SportBuds in place. They aren’t fitted with wing tips or seem that ergonomic, but they also shouldn’t fall out unless you’re attempting rigorous exercise – in which case you may want some running headphones like the Under Armor True Wireless Flash instead. I’d recommend these earbuds to anyone who wants an inexpensive option for working out and running; they’re easy to use and set-up, and offer a reliable quality of sound to keep you motivated as you run.
