Royal Commission of Inquiry into Municipal Corporations of England and Wales, First Report, Appendices: Part 3 (Parl. Jacob Ilive, Reasons Offered for the Reformation of the House of Correction in Clerkenwell (1757), p. When I started reading this novel I wasn’t sure I was going to enjoy it as the amount of anger exhibited by Tabitha, her excessive bad language and her aggressive manner made her a rather unsympathetic character - despite my feeling sorry for her for what had happened to her in the past; also I was surprised by the treatment meted out to Tabitha in prison - if she was on remand and innocent until proven guilty, would she have been treated in exactly the same way as those prisoners who had been found guilty?

It was known as County Bridewell, or the second House of Correction, built for the County of Kesteven, and which was in use from 1809 until 1878. Most importantly, it respects Bryan Browning’s design whereby the rear pediment rises up over the plain brick and stone coping of the wall, as reinstated along the back. In London, these developments led to a significant growth in the number of commitments to its four houses of correction. The open space in front of it was the men’s yard and the wall on the right was the boundary wall of the exercise yard. It’s an interesting and absorbing read with an interesting cast of characters which makes the story highly readable right from the start. She had never reported him and when his crime against her is disclosed, all the villagers simply think she is a slut. Despite its aspirations to be more humanitarian (its redesign was by John Howard), it became notorious for its strict regime of silence [4] and its use of the treadmill. The gatehouse was intended to be a powerful apotropaeic, having the purpose of averting or turning away evil, and consists of a stone-faced building with three bays, arched windows half blanked off and half grilled, the sides and back being finished in brick.
