In a conversation with Mark Kermode, Hewlett said that the 1973 French animated film Fantastic Planet was the very first animated film that showed him animation is also a medium for adults. In 2006, he was named Designer of the Year by the Design Museum in London, and in 2009, Hewlett and Albarn won a BAFTA for their animated Monkey sequence for the Beijing Olympic Games.

He also created the strip Get the Freebies, which was published monthly in English fashion magazine The Face. In fact, Hewlett has even stated that the entirety of Chuck Jones' filmography and Mad Magazine as a whole are the biggest overall influences on his work. This new TASCHEN edition, Hewlett s first major monograph, illustrates this thrilling creative journey with over 400 artworks from the Tank Girl era through Gorillaz and up to the present day.In 2015 The Suggestionists, an exhibition of prints at the Saatchi Gallery in London, demonstrated an exciting new direction in Hewlett's practice. Since then, Hewlett has continued to collaborate with Albarn on projects including an elaborate staging of the Chinese novel Monkey: Journey to the West by Wu Cheng’en, complete with circus acrobats, Shaolin monks, and Chinese singers. Ebenfalls mit Albarn realisierte er die spektakuläre Oper Monkey - Journey to the West nach dem chinesischen Roman Xi Yóu Ji von Wu Cheng'en, die 2007 in Manchester uraufgeführt wurde. Moving seamlessly between design, art and music, the co-creator of Tank Girl and the virtual band Gorillaz was awarded Designer of the Year by the Design Museum in 2006 and staged his first solo exhibition at London's Saatchi Gallery in 2015. Martin and Hewlett created Tank Girl, an anarchic strip about a teenage punk girl who drove a tank and had a mutant kangaroo for a boyfriend.

After a break of 20 years, artist Jamie Hewlett is leaping back on the Tank Girl wagon, re-teaming with series co-creator Alan Martin to bring you a whole new take! The definitive anthology of Tank Girl - presenting classic stories from original creators, Alan Martin and Jamie Hewlett, in colour for the first time ever! British artist Jamie Hewlett is a prolific producer of ever-fresh material infused with a punk sensibility. The book contains an oral history of Phoo Action, the TV pilot that was created by Hewlett and Mat Wakeham. He is the co-creator of the comic book Tank Girl with Alan Martin and co-creator of the virtual band Gorillaz, alongside Blur frontman Damon Albarn.

The booklet will be despatched flat in an oversized strong art mailer with acid-free tissue and heavy kraft paper via courier, insurance to full value. Broadcast on BBC Three back in 2008, the show is based on Hewlett’s Get The Freebies comic from the ’90s. Since then, Hewlett has continued to collaborate with Albarn on projects including an elaborate staging of the Chinese novel Monkey: Journey to the West by Wu Cheng'en, complete with circus acrobats, Shaolin monks, and Chinese singers. I am so extremely grateful to be their current custodian and curator, and that I still get to be a creative.

After leaving college Hewlett and Martin were invited by Ewins to create material for a new magazine he was setting up with Steve Dillon in 1988. More recently, an exhibition of prints at the Saatchi Gallery in London demonstrated an exciting new direction in Hewlett s practice. In January 2006, Hewlett's artwork for Gorillaz was shortlisted for the Design Museum's Designer of the Year award. The book is said to “present a definitive and exhaustive timeline of this cult masterpiece”, per an official listing. Featuring brand new artwork by Jamie Hewlett, who has invited more than 40 creators to offer new interpretations of 2D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle, and Russel Hobbs in one expansive volume of original artwork. Through stories, characters, strips, and sketches, we trace Hewlett s exceptional capacity for invention and celebrate a polymath artist who refuses to rest on his laurels, or to be pigeonholed into a particular practice. The massive collection includes Hewlett’s best known work across mediums, as well as shorter pieces and under-the-radar projects that reveal new insight into the mind of one of England’s most influential contemporary artists.
