That album has so much substance, and it’ll really suck you in, and you just really want to keep listening. t.” “Yellow Roses,” penned with (and sung with) Nashville ace Natalie Hemby, is a sweet, string-laced ballad that has the singer reemerging from her self-declared (and pandemic-enforced) isolation – “All day she climbed, peeked over the walls.I’m gonna live my life like it’s slipping away” is how Lissie closes her last album: she now realizes what it means to live to the fullest and isn’t going to waste any more time worrying about not being perfect or hiding her feelings to herself. While Chasing the Sun gave the idea of trying to see the light in life, looking for it even during the worst times, Night moves is more about being peacefully in the dark.

The singer looks into herself once again and shares other very personal lyrics that she managed to mould into very relatable words: “unlock the chains of love” is one of the best messages that appear in the album. In response to this personal upheaval, nothing is diluted and everything Lissie has to say is striking and said loudly on Carving Canyons. Lissie opens up her album with Unravel, a fiery break up ballad that introduces perfectly the main themes of the album. The album’s context – the loneliness at the center of the pandemic – feels almost behind the times (partly because of the surfeit of covid-based releases over the past few years). And as much as it’s terrible to have to go through hard things, these are the things that create this landscape of our lives, and all of its texture and its edges and its depressions and its color, that rich pageant of life that we all experience.We carry a broad range of CDs and vinyl (7”/12” singles and LPs) and specialise in indie, alternative, rock, punk, metal plus a few other genres.

With that song, Natalie, since she’s just an incredible crafter of songs, really had brought a title and a shape with her to the session, so I was able to sort of fill in the blanks alongside her via FaceTime to make the story work for me. L: Yeah and, I mean, talk about working with a total legend – she’s written some of the best songs ever! After telling herself that she is free to feel whatever at any moment, the singer opens up about feeling sad again, asking herself more questions, trying again to find the tipping point, the big mistake, why it didn’t work out. Having worked for many years with producer Curt Schneider – who also has credits with Patty Griffin, Jeff Beck, and Alanis Morissette among others – Lissie knew she could trust him to help her deliver this vision again.And we ended up writing over FaceTime, because it was during COVID, and it was right before Thanksgiving, and everyone was getting COVID. I think it would just be more peaceful if more people took responsibility for their emotions and did a little bit better of a job of being right with themselves so they didn’t have to go around and be sh!

And then I think, even just the last two years, being such a break, that even without touring I’m getting busy. Two years later we made the move to our present address, 35 The Headrow, where we have remained ever since.In most cases we do not send full replacements for these types of issues, unless the damage is severe. It’s almost impossible not to think about Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac when listening to this record: the classic guitar that accompanies the singer’s voice creating a calming yet atmosphere, the harmonies, her deep, warm tone… It’s familiar, but in the best way: it’s comforting, it’s homey. Never have I heard an album so easily able to shake me to my core, and yet so deeply cathartic and powerfully uplifting.
