I told him to **** off, and the guy pointed back over to Stevie and was like, ‘He’s just there, and he wants this record. DJ Fat Tony – real name Tony Marnach – and his co-author Michael Hennegan will be in conversation at Selfridges in Birmingham, as they celebrate the paperback release of I Don’t Take Requests. The DJ also helps at Resort 12, an LGBT specialist rehab clinic in Thailand, stating he thinks people in the community need special care. Tony is open about the fact that he nearly didn't make it, that when in the throws of addiction, there's usually no clear escape route. Unfortunately his ego and staggering grandiosity get in the way of what could have been a really interesting and inspiring book.

I strongly advise you read this book' TRACEY EMIN As one of club culture's most notorious - and best loved - figures, Tony is a complete force of nature. If I was making music today and I put out a track and suddenly one person said ‘oh you should change the bassline, it’s not quite right, that hook is not quite right’, why would you listen?

Instead, we went about it in reverse: first writing the synopsis, then finding the agent, and finally the publisher. Now, he is 14 years sober and, alongside working to help others overcome addiction, DJing for everyone from Elton John to Louis Vuitton and the Beckhams - and running one of lockdown's most popular Instagram accounts with its wickedly funny memes. People thought I was dead and didn’t really give a shit about me, I never wanted to be in that situation again. He continues to campaign for better equality for the LGBTQ+ community, though he says his own experience of coming out was a positive one. To this day, Siouxsie Sioux is the only person to have ever had the balls to slap me right across the face.

I thought DJ Fat Tony’s book would be entertaining but possibly one of those celeb books I wouldn’t really give much thought to. So to arrive on the tail end of Studio 54 closing, but then Palladium opening and Area - and all of these incredible clubs. But in Ibiza, we could be who we wanted to be, we could wear what we wanted to wear, and nobody would bat an eyelid. I stopped drinking, I stopped taking drugs and I became real, I became myself - I'm doing now what I should have done many years ago. That changed really quickly, the wind changed when it became both more monetised and more criminalised. The books featured on this site are aimed primarily at readers aged 13 or above and therefore you must be 13 years or over to sign up to our newsletter. At one point he claims he became ‘so psychotic’ that he believed there were creatures living inside his gums and attempted to remove them using household DIY tools.
