Coe and a few others gingerly ventured in via a harness. The chamber was full of rubble piled so high, walking upright was impossible. Still, the explorers were thrilled. “It was quite exhilarating when we found that opening,” Coe recalls. I limited myself to the area within Queens Drive for a few reasons. Firstly, I need to stop somewhere! Queens Drive provides the perfect boundary, encircling the city as it does. In the future I may add streets outside this boundary. For neatness’ sake, I’ve clipped roads which cross Queens Drive and head off into the surburbs. My second reason is that by far the most frequent requests for road locations are from within this area. So all in all, it made sense to release this tool with the current data, and expand later on if possible. Accuracy of a map of old streets of Liverpool Bromborough Pool Village inspired William Lever to build his own model village at nearby Port Sunlight. There’s also The Grapes pub, where The Beatles used to drink between sets. It’s one of my favourite places in the city! 4. Penny Lane

This concept also extends into the future. In years to come, will your shiny new PC be able to read the letters you typed to your pen pal? How about the essay you wrote in school on Windows 95, or DOS, or on a Mac? There are already a large number of files on my computer that I can no longer read. They were created with Microsoft Works, a program which I no longer own. Of course, I might be able to find a modern programme which can read these ancient files, but there are already a number of people trying to prevent this situation from developing, or getting worse. Open archaeology to the rescueFrom the stunning architectural buildings on Dale Street to the impressive Three Graces at the Pier Head . Which of the great and good of previous centuries might have looked out on this vista, waiting for their ship to come in? Trams and railways in old Liverpool This is such a wonderful place to walk along and snap photos as you go – it’s one of the prettiest streets in Liverpool. The stunning images are just a tiny glimpse of the wider collection.

In the Wavertree suburb of Liverpool, you’ll find one of the most iconic streets in Liverpool – Arnold Grove. If you’re a Beatles fan or just someone who loves music – there’s one Liverpool street you absolutely can’t miss – Mathew Street! Known as one of the best Beatles landmarks in the city, Mathew Street is a holy ground for music lovers. This is a map of all the old streets of Liverpool within the boundary of Queens Drive (plus a few helpful extra roads at the far north and south). By ‘old’, I mean it shows the streets as they were before vast swathes were demolished in the first half of the 20th century. Therefore it should be a great help in tracing where your ancestors lived and/or worked. For example, you can look up the Welsh streets of Toxteth, many of the courts of Everton, and even the inner parts of the more recent suburbs in West Derby.

The wonders of William Brown Street don’t end there! The World Museum is also on this street, offering exhibitions on natural history, archaeology, and world cultures. They even have a planetarium! While Liverpool city centre continues to grow and adapt to the needs of a modern city, inevitably some of its old streets have disappeared off the map. Outside the city centre during the 20th century, Everton has seen some of the most prominent redevelopment, resulting in uprooted communities and vanished streets. A leader in the ECHO in December 1967 said: “The James Street walkway will be at least a promise that a day is coming when vehicles and walkers are no longer in thrombotic contention in the main arteries in the heart of Liverpool.”

William Brown Street is where you’ll find some of the most beautiful public buildings in the city. Named after a local benefactor, this street is a treasure trove of Liverpool landmarks and free museums. Thanks for your comments. Yes, the ingenuity, not to mention the work rate, of the Victorians never ceases to amaze me. I think the fact that Edge Hill is around a station just spurred them on even more at the height of the Industrial Revolution, when Liverpool wanted to be the transport hub of Britain. Whether it's celebrating people, remembering a place long forgotten or opening the Echo archives to mark a special anniversary, Days Gone By will be an essential read. There were clusters of walkways around the city– including around Old Hall Street and St Johns Shopping Centre. And that 1971 Daily Post report said: “Eventually walkways will be used for open air exhibitions, displays and even open air cafes”. * What went wrong? Lime Street is one of Liverpool’s most famous and well-known streets – and most of that is because of the train station here! But you don’t need to do that right now, as Hugh Hollinghurst has put together a neat little collection published by Amberley. Old photographs of Liverpool However, the terraces might have been a different story. I’m sure some would have been better maintained by their owners than others, but they would have been a class above courts. Still, I think the view was that the buildings that would replace all this housing would be better. We now know that the situation would not be so simple. But many other streets in the city centre once had very different names, and here we've listed the fascinating - and sometimes gruesome - reasons why they changed.

Gore’s/Kelly’s Directories. Many street directories included folded maps of the city. These have been removed and are available separately. The Frith images also make a great talking point for young and old, as many older people love looking at our images online and sharing their memories of these places with the younger generation.
